Did AT&T more commonly use 850 or 1900 because my guess is that in my area, Cingular used one and AT&T used the other. On that website, why are there multiple listings...I am guessing because of the aquisition of AT&T, but still there are like three in certain areas. And has anyone ever heard of POPLAR PCS, because I haven't.

ATT used to be high on the 850 and most of the phones they sold when they launched was 850, then after like 1-1.5 years they were switching to the 1900 ,which meant customers then needed to start buying newer models.

In your area it was probably Cingular on 850 and AT&T on 1900. The 850 (or 800 depending on whose naming convention you want to use) band (Cellular) licenses were from the original analog cellular days when the FCC had only two licenses avaliable. I assume that in your area of Arkansas it was probably Bellsouth and Alltel that were originally awarded those licenses. The 1900 band (PCS) licenses were auctioned off years later. In every market there could be as few as 6 or as many as 8 PCS licenses. In the case of Poplar PCS it may be that they obtained a license and instead of building out a network of their own and just rent the ability to use their spectrum to some other carrier (Cingular, Alltel, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon etc.)
