Research In Motion Acting Weird

The Blackberry Pearl, Curve, and 8800 series have all been pretty well available on all carriers. However, with RIM's latest lineup they seem to be favoring exclusivity with their phones for some reason. For example, the Blackberry Bold is exclusive on AT&T, the Blackberry Pearl Flip is exclusive on T-Mobile, and the Blackberry Storm will be exclusive on Verizon Wireless. Why is RIM doing this? I know a lot of ppl that would love to upgrade to a brand new Pearl Flip on ATT. Explanations???...

Well you obviously don't know much. The pearl was exclusive with t-mobile first. The curve was exclusive with at&t first. exclusivity is nothing new to RIM.

Actually, ATT got the pearl and 8800 first the T-Mobile got them. Now when T-Mobile got them they were the colored ones and ATT just had the black and red ones. The ones for T-Mobile were actually the 8120 with Wi-Fi. ATT then got the Curve which was exclusive for about six months then T-Mobile got it as well. Verizon and Sprint had to wait more time since RIM is not totally into CDMA. Because of this RIM made them GSM/CDMA combos. Not bad but a little late. From what I've heard ATT declined the Storm because of the agreement with Apple. This will help Verizon out in the BB catergory which I believe they are in fourth place.

Our RIM rep. has said that ATT is the number one BB seller in the nation, followed by Sprint, followed by T...

Actually I just had a RIM rep tell us at the Storm training that Verizon had recently eclipsed AT&T to become BB's largest carrier, one of the main reasons they made the Storm exclusive to Verizon in the US.

It's interesting what RIM reps say. The one that came and showed us the Bold a few weeks ago before launch concurred with bwag said...could it be they are just trying to play us off of each other??

Really? Hmm, that's a distinct possibility. I wonder how it will add up once the Alltel BB customers are added in. Either way I'm glad to see RIM putting out new/exciting devices and quality ones at that.

That's strange that a RIM rep would say that. Maybe he means that Verizon sells the MOST BB data plans. Since ATT doesn't make the customer keep the data (beyond the six months to get and keep the rebate) that could be what he was referencing. I heard the thing about the Storm being rejected from ATT long ago right before the iPhad 3G came out. Verizon only has it for a year (same with the pearl flip), so I assume that ATT will get it then.

Well what she told me is that Verizon recently eclipsed AT&T to have the most people subscribing to Blackberry Internet Service/Blackberry Enterprise Server...now I'm not sure if AT&T requires a Data Plan on BB's but Verizon does, so that might be why.

ATT only requires it for the first 6 months to get the rebate back. Total Blackberries sold, I believe ATT has a clear edge. I even get idiots with PAY AS YOU GO that have pearls and curves.

Really? I can't imagine what a bill for pay as you go data on a bb would be, do you always see data bills for theses customers because they way I understand BB's they are always using a data connection...and if so do people actually keep the pay as you go?

You can't access BB data without a postpaid account and BB data plan( regardless what anyone on this forum may tell you), but that doesn't stop an idiot from asking why they can't download ringtones for their (stolen) Pearl.

Lol wow. Well I will say one thing let us hope that AT&T buys those divested areas for Alltel, I want something other than CDMA phones to play with (just because I'm a phone geek and like all phones not just the ones the people I work for sell).

I've had all four of the Big carriers and found ATT to be the best fit for me. Yeah, I work for an ATT dealer , but I had ATT 4 years before I started working here. I laugh when I get people in the store or read here that they get poor coverage from either ATT or Verizon. It's usually because they penny-pinch and get a POS phone rather than the mildly expensive phone the rep probably recommended. 🙂
