at&t's network is
GSM 850, GSM 1900, UMTS 850, and UMTS 1900

If your phone doesn't have that, it won't work

Unfortunately, the two technologies are incompatible. It's kind of like putting an old vinyl 45 record in a CD player. It just won't work. (No I am not saying that CDMA is an ancient technology like vinyl, just was the first analagy that I could come up with). Even with all of the correct frequencies, the CDMA phone will not work on the GSM network. It doesn't work the other way around either.

I compare it to Mac/Windows

The two do not work together because they are built on separate technologies.

I prefer the "diesel in a gasoline engine" analogy.
