The Cingular Union

I work in a blue call center and friday there was the chick passing out propaganda from the Cingular union. The way it was worded, (but not in these words) it was saying how getting paid less wouldnt mean anything if we arent covered by a union....I dont know about any of you, but I enjoy my starting pay of 12/hour. I would not want to go down in pay for the sake of a union. (I need that to survive!) Now while being in a union is definity helpful, you know with job sercurity and all, I dont know if that would fly in the call center I am in--with less pay....am I right or am I totally off based? I guess I am not really worried about my job since b/c of the location I am in, and the tasks they are adding. (They are using the call center I am i...

you are covered at least here in my state wether you pay dues or not. sounds like they are trying to organize where you are. if the union does come in and change pay across the board. then u get raises every 6 months and when the union contract anniversary date.

unions are the devil. they would drop your wage to minimum, youd have to negotiate for any and all benefits you already get, and in addition pay union dues off your now reduced paycheck every pay check. for what? ive been in 3 unions. not one of them has ever helped me with anything, ever, and none of my friends who are unionized have anything good to say about them. the benefits to a union are far far less then the downsides. id suggest voting "no" to any union vote that comes up. save yourself the hassles later.

All I know is that where I work in Cingular the Union hasn't done a horrible job.

My benefits far exceed anything my friends have union or not, my pay is more than fair based on my education and experience, and my local reps are all helpful and quick to resolve any grievances/issues.

And for less than 20 bucks a month I will not gripe about my dues, especially when the union will represent an employee wether they pay dues or not.

But that's just my 2 cents.

then your lucky. when i was with safeway canada (grocery store chain) i worked in the warehouse. after just 3 months on the job doing 75 hours a week, (at my supervisors request)i started having sore shoulders. a quick doctors apointment advised me that my roator cuff...or maybe cup? anyway that it was starting to wear out in my right shoulder. i had to miss a half day at work, (so i only worked 7 hours) and was talking to a coworker about why i missed. another supervisor overheard me, and left the room. this co worker advised me to keep such medical stuff to myself. i dismissed the advice as paranoia. next day i was fired because "things were not working out" i was 1 week from finishing my 90 day probation. i had already paid over 200 bucks...

sounds like youve been in some crappy unions. my union dues are so cheap i don't even miss them. grievences actually do mean something if justified. the benefits are by FAR the best i have EVER had in any non-union environment. ($21 a month for a married couple is pretty damn good) as far as pay goes, they keep negotiating higher pay rates, not lower, and each union employee is guarateed a raise on their anniversary.

Yeah, but the downside to the "guarenteed" raise is that even if I hit 300% of goal for the year and the guy next to me hits 75%, we get the same raise. Which I think STINKS... Just my opinion.

😳 Do most of you call ctr reps know we MAY be going on strike? This is an intolerable situation. I never thought I'd be going thru this kind of crap 👿

nothing like that were i was. i started at 9.50 an hour. a guy i talked to who was there for 3 years was only makin 11.75 he said that in order for him to get a raise, he had to pass an interview/performance review with 3 sups, and 2 union reps. if he didnt get a unanimous descion scoring higher then a certian mark, no raise. and the raise was dependant on his score. so a 70% would be 20 cent raise.... 80% 40 cents....and so on. plus he said contacting reps to file a grievinces was a hassle, they never got answerd.... and there was always flyers about company picnics and bbqs...movie nights etc, that the union deducted fees from to fund. but we never saw those events happen. they were always canceled "due to lack of intrest" but the fees nev...

There is no place in todays work world in North America for Unions.

Way back in the day when Unions were first forms there was a real need for them. To stop the abuse of companies and to protect the worker.

But now a days we have something called Labour Laws. The gov't protects the workers. Unions do nothing but hurt the company by forcing the company to keep employess who, to be polite, Are a waste of space.
Which wastes company money. Which means the honest hard workers have to work harder to take up the slack from those who don't work b/c the union protects them.

Unions charge all these fee's and serve no purpose. All the union jobs I've had were HORRIBLE working conditions because the Union f'ed the company to many time...

I disagree with you to an extent.

My step father is in the USPS union and had a supervisor that hated him with a passion and trade to get him in as much trouble as possible. However because the place was unionized, the bogus claims of the supervisor where always dismissed and eventually got the supervisor himself fired.

So not ALL unions are bad, there are places where they are still needed.

I am a cingular union rep and I have a mixed opinion of our union. I think as a whole being part of the union is a good thing. The plus is that it takes longer to fire a worker who is past the probation period. The minus of being part of the union is that your individual raises are not based upon your performance at cingular just time in title. That can be tough to take beacuse you might know you work harder than the person sitting next to you. You also know that it willt ake a long time to get rid of them because they are union just like you. At times seems like union contracts protect the wrong people.

Twenty-plus years ago I was doing installs in Florida when I had to do a job in a "union-town". So I had to join the local union in order to have "permission" to do my job. My first day on the site a union rep runs up to me and says to me in a german accent "Show me your papers! You can't be here without your papers!" The engineer I was working (long gone by now) still had the numbers on the side of his arm from the "camp" he lived in as a boy. I didn't mention to him my reception.

Before then I was actually kinda neutral, but since then I have little love for unions.
