I have a motorola V551 EDGE capable phone. from what i've been told EDGE is already available in all Cingular markets so why doesnt seem like when i'm browsing medianet it seems so slow.
I get that all the time with my 6230. It seems the same speed I got with my v400. 😕

EDGE is based off of how close you are to a tower, the closer you are the faster the speeds... So if you are far enough away, it reverts back to GPRS... A local store should be able to tell you how close you through a system we have called MTI Map Tool.
Actually, EDGE is a software upgrade to GPRS so the distance is a factor but to a lesser degree. Depending on where you are in the foot print, the original Cingular towers are only 93% EDGE ready and the other 7% is covered by the original AT&TWS towers making it 100% EGDE capable. The problem is that ENS and a 64K SIM are for load balancing the networks but it does not give priority to what data network you will pick up. That is what is h...

it's because you are actually using gprs. In order to get the speed of the edge network, you will have to purchase a "data connect" package, which is considerably more expensive than media net, media net only uses gprs, not edge. It's a bad marketing scheme if you ask me. Cingular advertises "faster download speed w/edge internet" that is correct but what they don't mention is that you have to get a "data connect" not "media net" package, and an unlimited data connect package will run you around 79.99 per month!
then that explains it. i am about a half mile from a tower and get good connections but it just seems like a ripoff that edge is only avaialable to data connect and not media ne...

Give me details...did you have to change settings?, etc.

What did you have to do to get the EDGE speed. The information I just put in the thread was information I received from an account rep with Cingular.

Where are you? And EDGE and GPRS are backwards compatible so there is no special setting. You just need EDGE enabled on the network and an EDGE device. I hate to tell you but, you were played by that Rep. you sppoke to. Holla!
