Warranty Void?

agostinod

This may be a dumb question but I figured I'd ask to be on the safe side... If I were to purchase a phone through ebay or some other 3rd party seller, would my manufacter warranty be voided? I'm not sure if the customer service rep would ask for proof of purchase or not. Thanks for any input...

Warranty reps will require the IMEI of the device, which will show the handset wasn't purchased through any of the COR or Agent(Dealers, Walmart, etc.) channels, at which point they will advise you of the out of warranty cost to exchange the devise

so pretty much it's better to purchase the e71x through ATT site rather than ebay? I'm eligible for an upgrade but I'd rather spend a bit more and stay out of contract...

You will still have the warranty through Nokia. AT&T just wont be obligated to offer their warranty exchange.

Just be sure to buy an AT&T branded device rather than a factory direct unlocked device.

If you don't buy the phone through a corp store or an authorized agent (and the phone must be new/re-certified) the warranty typically won't be covered.

If the phone is new, from a third party vendor, the phone will still be under warranty, but through the manufacturer, not through ATT. If something goes wrong with the equipment, you would have to contact the manufacturer and see how they will handle the warranty. Exchange by Mail from ATT would not touch it.

Now if I were to have insurance through ATT (The $4.99/MO) I am assuming I would be covered through that?

odds are against it...if you already have insurance on your account, when you have the IMEI updated for the new phone, they will/should ask for proof of purchase to show that is is less than 30 days old...without that, insurance cannot be carried on the device, and if you don't update the account, insurance typically won't cover the handset

Insurance will cover it. Worst case you may have to fax in a proof of purchase but insurance will cover it.

Now lets say the proof of purchase was a receipt from ebay, insurance will still cover it?

BTW, thanks for all the info throughout this thread!

Proof of insurance would need to be from some authorized retailer. As Ebay is not an authorized retailer that would most likely not work. Now I have sold some stock via ebay and provide a receipt showing my company name, IMEI, date of purchase, etc. that is 100% legit.

It all depends on who you bought the phone from. I am sure you know but for the home audience, you didn't buy the phone FROM ebay, you bought it from xyz wireless or Joe Smith on ebay.

Good luck.

Asurion will take a photocopy of the back of the phone showing the sticker with the imei number so just photocopy the back and keep it someplace.

Touching on what Texaswireless said, the phone will be marked if it existed inside the AT&T set of elligible IMEIs. If it is branded AT&T and within 1 year of the original activation date then they will commonly warranty the device. In the past they asked for information about the original account it was set up on however, so you might want to keep that in mind if it wasn't new in box. Otherwise, new in box and AT&T branded it should be fine. Unlocked manufacturer direct devices are not covered by Asurian or AT&T XBM.

And that's really why I waited for the AT&T version of the e71 because I have insurance and if something had happened I would have been $hit out of luck...

unlocked devices are covered by asurion. If it's not something att covers you are gonna get whatever the asurion rep thinks is a comparable att phone based on features/functions but they are covered.

Problem is, how is Asurion suppose to know what unlocked phone is being used if the actual carrier doesn't know? Lets say I purchased a Nokia e71 (Obviously unlocked) and ATT systems would not read my device, am I suppose to call Asurion and give them the IMEI? Seems confusing, lol, or maybe it's just me...

You should update your account with the new IMEI. It won't change your contract and AT&T doesn't give two sh*ts if you use an unlocked device. If it's an AT&T marked device the warranty process would be made easier if it's on the account. They can see the IMEI you are using regardless.

But wouldn't giving ATT the new IMEI for a phone they don't have in their system (Unlocked) be pointless?

No, the point would be that it would streamline any warranty or insurance processes. The downside of course is that the exchanged device would be locked.
