Bad Initial Connection

I have a Nokia 6230 with a Philly area code and am using it in New York City. I'd say that 90% of the time I receive a call it is either painfully full of static or I can only hear my own echo and not the caller, and the caller cannot hear me.

After the caller calls back (sometimes twice) the problem is relieved. But that does not seem like it should be happening.

Any thoughts or ideas on the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Oddly enough, that's usually a problem with the SIM card. I've had customers complain of what seems to be commonly called "demon possession" of the phone... where your own voice sounds like the spawn of satan to whomever you're speaking with. Replacing the SIM card, or sometimes simply adjusting it works wonders.

I would say have it checked out next time you are back down in Philly... There is a tech store, on Cottman and Castor Avenues... A SIM swap may help, but it sounds like a connection issue in that market... What area of NY are you in?

I'm using it in Manhattan. My friend also has a Philly number on a Sony Ericsson T637 and is using it in DC. He has even worse problems than I do. Usually takes people 3 to 4 tries to get him after sitting through busy signals.

I forgot to mention people sometimes get busy signals when calling me, though not as bad as with his phone. Maybe this might be a problem with Philly phones that venture outside of Philly?

I go to Long Island and have no issues and I go into Queens, same thing no issues... I don't spend much time in DC though... DO you still live here, or do you live up there?

A) Will Cingular give me a new sim card? It seems like they can sometimes not be too thrilled to do that.

B)What do you mean by adjusting it? At this point I'm willing to try anything.

Thanks

Removing it and make sure its in correctly.

Its easy. Its power cycling your phone. Turning it off then removing the battery and sim card. Then replacing them. You would be amazed at how much that helps in a lot of cases.

Some stores will do a swap of your old for a new one. By adjusting I mean just taking it out, making sure it's clean (maybe blowing on the card reader) and wiggling it back in.

(sorry for the long response time, work got busy.)

OK, so I tried swapping it out a blowing on the reader. No good so far. I called Cingular and the CSR tried helping me, even got a tech guy involved.

The tech guy said it's b/c they're working on my tower. But the CSR knew this wasn't the case b/c it's been happening for a few months and not just in this one locale.

He determined that it's a hardware issue (also b/c he called my phone and got a T99 message, or some message that says the phone isn't working). He usggested I do an exchange by mail.

This is already my second 6230. Is this maybe one of the reasons behind them rolling out the 6230i? Plus I'm not too keen on getting a refurbished 6230 in exhcnage for this one, especially considering the first wave of them had email ...

Maybe it is because you are "roaming" on T-Mobile up there too... That might have something to do with it.

Nah, that was the case before the merger coincidentally when this didn't happen. I'm now on the old AT&T tower. The CSR even verrified that. Thanks though.

I don't think it's just any particular phone doing this. The reason why is my dad has the Nokia 6340i and had the same exact problem and nobody could ever figure out what the cause was. Everytime I would call him or he would call me it would sound like satan was in the phone. Eventually it just cleared up on it's own and it hasn't done it since.

I have a 6230 as well and I have people complain that when they call me and I answer there is a weird loud static noise before I start talking. Anyone get this as well. 😕
