Ok, help me out here. UMTS(WCDMA) and HSDPA are being released by Cingular by 2006ish. So, does the WCDMA have anything to do with or allow roaming onto CDMA networks...or are they in no way connected? Or is it just for data? So when a phone says:
GSM 800/GSM 1900/WCDMA 1900, then the WCDMA is for voice or just data or a seperate band or what? Europe uses the 2100 band right? I know that it is supposed to be capable of higher data speeds or is that just the HSDPA part? As you can see, I am very confused on what exactly it is. Clarification would be great...Thanks.

WCDMA has nothing to do with CDMA aside from the acronym that is. It's my understanding that WCDMA is a voice protocol. As far as the bands I'm not sure I understood you correctly so I'll leave someone else to address that.
...
UMTS is for voice and HSPDA is for data, kind like GSM/GPRS, in fact HSPDA send data almost just like GPRS in packets but at a faster rate, now UMTS or WCDMA has almost nothing to do with CDMA, you will not be able to roam on to CDMA netwroks with a UMTS phone
...
WCDMA is a true 3g protocol that provides simultaneous voice and data access, which means that you can take calls and talk on the phone while you are using it to surf the internet. the protocol does cover both voice and data, and it is faster than GPRS and EDGE. currently, WCDMA data rates are roughly similar to low-end DSL.
HSDPA is an update to WCDMA that will provide much faster data rates. in a way, HSDPA is to WCDMA as EDGE is to GPRS.
most of this pretty much comes from the training they gave us on the blue side when AT&T Wireless started WCDMA service last summer.
Please, anyone, correct me if I am wrong.

I just wonder when we might see the first UTMS handset here in the U.S. I really like the Nokia 6682 that is coming soon, however it will not be cheap I am sure. I just don't want to drop alot of money on that phone, and then soon after we start to see UTMS phones coming out, then I would have to spend more money (gotta keep up with the times yanno lol)..having said that, isn't HSDPA soon to follow UMTS, so would it be better to wait on HSDPA handsets to come out?
...
HSDPA is said to launch late 2005 early 2006 so I dont know if you want to wait that long. Its funny with all this new technology becasue really Edge is still not very widespread. Not many people actually use Edge yet nor do they have it yet.
...
Yeah its like going EDGE then wham with UTMS then wham with HSDPA..kinda back to back to back lol..technology is moving very rapidly..but we are almost done with Q1 of 2005 so I dont mind waiting a little while to see how things play out..probably gonna hold out on getting the 6682..that new Moto 1150 looks pretty damn good also..

I got this right off the glossary terms on phonescoop.com
'WCDMA
(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access)
Wideband CDMA is a third-generation (3G) wireless standard which utilizes one 5 MHz channel for both voice and data, initially offering data speeds up to 384 Kbps.
WCDMA is also referred to as UMTS - the two terms have become interchangeable.
WCDMA is the 3G standard that most GSM carriers are moving to. Parts of the WCDMA standard are based on GSM technology. WCDMA networks are designed to integrate with GSM networks at certain levels. Most WCDMA phones include GSM as well, for backward compatibility.
WCDMA borrows certain technology ideas from CDMA, as the name implies, but is in fact very different and incom...

Something else confuses me..if a phone is Quad Band it is supposed to be compatible world wide..have they now added a 5th band, the 2100Mhz band as you mentioned, and as I have read in other places?
...
I think 2100MHZ is pretty new. I know that Cingular doesnt offer that Frequency yet on there phones. But thats just from what I know.
...
Not to add to the confusion or anything, but I am wondering..... Aside from faster data speeds, what other advantage, if any, is there to an eventual switch to wcdman/utms?
Is this going to in any way increase call quality and or range of towers. It would be cool if fewer towers were needed, thus resulting in faster rates of network expansion.
...
It will allow voice and data communication at the same time is one advantage.
...
That would be cool.
Another question that comes to mind.... Would it allow me to use PhoneScoop without having to log in every 5 frickin' minutes? 😡
...
Nope, nothing will do that. 🙂
...
Yeah that would be too efficient
...
or you could click the remember password and remember screen name boxes when you sign in. 😉
...
really? it works for me. it must be your computers.
...
been there done that... it is the network, rich even said so.
...
sure it will....if you set it to automatically log in, which is what I do at home....here at work......HELL NO!!

Well, I'm at work... so you understand my predicament. 😉
...
yeah, If I did that chances are a co-worker would take advantage of it and use my name to post some idiot comment.
I can do that my damn self thank you very much.
my quote for the day is:
"I caught you a delicious bass!" 😎
...
or you could just remember to sign out.
...
nah...that'd be too much work. Besides if it's set to remember you then you're signed in as soon as you open the window....wouldn't do much good to sign out if it's just gonna sign you back in once a new window's opened.
Plus we've got this rule about saving passwords and crap here.

what? that doesn't make any sense to me.
...
if you set the sight to remember you then you're automatically logged in everytime a browser's pointed to phonescoop from your PC. If that's the case then it doesn't do any good to sign out, cause all someone would have to do is open a new window. The reason none of my co-workers post here is cause they don't take the time to register...why let em use mine by settin it to remember me?
...
i meant go back in and un-check the boxes. do you use mozilla?
...
How is Mozilla? Good or bad..
...
oh...didn't know that's what ya meant. At home I do use Firefox....and I like it a lot. Here at work we're on IE. Doesn't matter anyway, we're not allowed to save passwords or have sites remember us since others may have to use our computers when we're not here.

Jackie, I am a classically trained tenor. We will have to get together and jam.

Did you get my PM from before...
...
Lucky...all I've got's an Ibanez Soundgear 5-string. But it thumps with the right amp setup. Too bad I had to sell my amp to help pay the rent over the summer. 😢
...
I also have a Carvin 5-string fretless, wood grain beauty, but I haven't picked her up in a while.

oh well... worth a try (shrugs) 🙂

I hope so..I have the same problem lol
