AT&T has 20 days left...

ATnT Nokia

to keep their word of launching MMS and Tethering for the iPhone 3G S customers "later this summer".

Autumn begins on Tuesday, September 22, 2009.

Twenty days and counting, AT&T...

PLACE YOUR BETS FOLKS!

I bet ten bucks we'll see the autumnal equinox before we see an announcement from AT&T that MMS and Tethering are ready to go for the iPhone 3 G S.

Making promises that aren't kept has been an AT&T problem since the old ATTWS days.

They have picked up a lot of the bad habits of old AWS. The new AT&T should know better!

I've said it before I'll say it again. They didn't specify what year in late summer it will be available.

Umm...call me crazy... but when you say "late summer" or any season really, it's pretty much implied that it will be in that current year. If I had the Iphone and it's wasan't MMS capable by the "promise" time of late summer this year, I would be pretty pissed.

Q1: Why has it taken AT&T 3+ months to come on board with iPhone MMS?

Q2: Why do all of AT&T's non-smartphones have such poor cameras on them? Even the flagship Bold is only 2.0 MP...

You wouldn't think that these two questions had any relationship to each other, but I'm going to throw my hat out there that they both have the same answer-

AT&T can't support 3+ megapixel MMS on their current platform. Those of you out there who have Sprint or Verizon handsets with 3.0+ cameras on them probably get the same interesting response I do when I snap a still-frame picture at highest resolution and send it to my brother-in-law who owns a 3G AT&T handset: The message just never gets there, and he has no idea that I even sent it!

Now, i...

I think the advent of smartphones is a bad thing for our current wireless infrastructure. The iphone has proven that with all of the strain it's put on AT&T's network. AT&T is as least doing something to improve the network versus sitting on its butt and playing chicken like the old ATTWS used to do.

The problem is that ATT uses the same bands for data and voice. yes, this allows people to surf the net while talking, but it also means that if a lot of people are surfing the net, your call drops.

Yes, Iphone users do put a strain on networks, but the problem wouldn't be as big on a network that splits the two streams (or prioritizes voice). If it was on a network that does, the data side of things would suffer(maybe), but people would still be able to make calls.

No, my favorite ATTWS move was to try to migrate everyone to the inferior GSM product when the network wasn't even ready to launch. They followed that up with botching LNP and shutting down customer service for 10 DAYS! Why do you think the Cingy merger happened?

You nailed it. For years I've wondered why my K790a keeps telling me that my pics are too big and that the phone will reduce its size before sending it. It's because of this. I hope that once the iphone can send MMS, I'll be able to send the great pics I take with my still unbeatable k790a's camera

It shouldn't matter what size camera your phone has. The phone should auto size it to support mms @ 300kb or 600 kb like you said. I'm sure the reliability on sending a photo with a c905a isn't hampered by the resolution on the 8mp camera since it autosizes the photo anyways. The samsung eternity has a 3mp cam just like the iphone and has no problems sending mms.

What you're not understanding is that the dumbing down of picture quality ONLY happens on AT&T's network (in North America) because their MMS architecture that was installed 7 or 8 years ago was woefully short-sighted.

Every other carrier has been ...

I think you are correct on this one. Check this article out and see why?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/technology/compani ... »

There are 20 million smartphone users and 9 million iPhone users but the iPhone users use 10 times the network capacity as other smartphone users. They are data leeches. No carriers network would have been able to stand up to this amount of use. AT&T should let the exclusive agreement expire and give their network a break. Let VZ, Sprint, and TMobile carry some of that congestion because one network will not be able to handle a large amount of iPhone users.

That sucks. Sounds like they definitely need to put more towers up in your vicinity. I would have probably said the hell with it and paid the ETF and sold the phone to try to recoup some of the cost.

dont hold your breathe... in telegence (billing system) mms is provisioned but the phone doesnt seem to match up with the feature. once its able to be tethered then there would be a feature for tethering the iphone but its not. you cant tether Apple products at the time until they release it, its not coming from ATT its not an ATT product we just provide service not the functions
