From the September 3, 2009 New York Times Business section:

Customers Angered as iPhones Overload AT&T

By JENNA WORTHAM

Slim and sleek as it is, the iPhone is really the Hummer of cellphones.

It’s a data guzzler. Owners use them like minicomputers, which they are, and use them a lot. Not only do iPhone owners download applications, stream music and videos and browse the Web at higher rates than the average smartphone user, but the average iPhone owner can also use 10 times the network capacity used by the average smartphone user.

“They don’t even realize how much data they’re using,” said Gene Munster, a senior securities analyst with Piper Jaffray.

The result is dropped calls, ...

Wow, congratulations, you are the 1 millionth person to post this type of thread. Please call customer service to claim your prize.

We get it. There's lots of iPhone users - they hog the network, and ATT's network isn't able to handle it at this time in many major metro areas. Does anyone post any actual helpful information to customers on this site anymore?

if the network is so bad.. i think the best thing to do is switch providers but of course they arent going to do that, its easier to complain about it rather than find a better solution

no its not like that...we cant better the network overnight. and i know if i had ATT and it was so bad like people say it is, i wouldnt accept it and find somewhere thats better for me.. of course we want to keep our customers but if we not right for them then we need to be honest about it and let them know their options

So are you letting people out of the contracts with no termination fee's since you are "not right for them?" In my area, I have good coverage, so this is not an issue, but seriously, customer service is crappy. And then to tell people it's their fault they want to use the network and services they PAY for? It's not like the I-phone has been out for a month, so they have had plenty of time to boost up their network. To blame it on the customer's usage is sh**** customer service, in my opinion.

well you are entitled to that opinion just like everybody else. and yes im a supervisor but i dont set the rules...and if a customer is in an area where they dont have good coverage and need to switch to a different provider we have a resolutions department that handles these type of issues. and depending on the situation you could get the ETF's waived. and we have great customer service..maybe the reps you spoke with were bad but we have over a 95% customer service rating. nobody forces anybody to get our service and we arent a monopoly its your choice if you want it or not

They're not talking about a better network overnight, they are talking about a better network in the 2+ years that this has been an issue.

With such a huge portion of your customer base being smartphone users, expanding and strengthening your 3g network should be a higher priority than just trying to make it faster in a few markets.

you're not a supervisor. If you are, then AT&T needs to replace you with someone with a college education.

let me break it down in simple terms:

Bad network = dissatisfied Customers

dissatisfied Customers = cancelled accounts

cancelled accounts = lose of revenue

lose of revenue = monetary losses

monetary losses = LAY OFFS

Do you hear now? Or, do I need to draw you a picture?

No. If you want helpful posts go to another website.

Actually the news posts are pretty helpful, and if you go into the phone forums it's rather helpful. Every once and awhile you'll find something decent on the carrier pages, but the Trolls here found all the right "hot button" issues to start a flame war whenever someone tries making sense, so clarity is a rare thing.

What is your question Dromant?

No question, just frustrated by the endless trolling and "my carrier is better than your carrier" arguments that are all that seem to be on the carrier forums anymore. They used to be a good site to go to get information on upcoming items, actual service questions, etc, but now are just one flame war after another.

I agree. Its even more frustrating seeing 70% of the posts as iphone crap when agents can't even sell it still.
