Can you avoid the blackberry data fee?

My friend has a 2 line family plan with unlimited family texting and pays $10 on each line for unlimited internet. Her hubby wants to buy an unlocked Blackberry, and he is hoping to still get to use his $10 unlimited web access for it.

My question is, is this even possible?

I think his goal is to eventually get an unlocked Storm 2 and use it on his account with the cheaper web plan he uses now. 🙄

DOnt change the IMEI on the account stick the sim card in and you can access Media Net. Services like Blackberry Messenger and push e-mail could be impacted.

Not true. I had a Blackberry on my account, did NOT change the IMEI and I could not access MediaNet, it would not work. I had the 15 dollar data plan too.

Well I've read of people doing it with unlocked Nokia's, Like the E71 and E63. But I wasn't sure what to tell him with the Blackberry.

You must have been using an older blackberry when you tried this. I used to have a bb 8300 and 8310 with media net and internet worked fine. BB messenger and Push Email will not work however.

What is supposed to happen is at&t's system is supposed to be able to catch what phone your using now without you updating the imei. So if you have a blackberry that you are paying the $10 media net plan and their system flags your account it can automatically add the $30 package. The question would be if their system can catch a phone it doesn't normally see like an unlocked Storm 2. My guess is it wouldn't be able to.

Sigma,

Do they have anytype of package that comes between the 200 text msg package and the 1500? Also do they really have a $15 data package?

I just wish they could offer tier pricing on Blackberry data plans. I loved my Pearl but had no use for push email.

I would love to see them have a data plan for like say, $20 that would just let you access the internet. Then you could add push email if it was needed.

It would be a great idea. They had that at one time but opted to go with the unlimited data plan instead. (XPress Mail) 🙂

Are you sure it will automatically add the $30 feature? I don't think it will.
