International PrePaid SIMs
This isn't a Cingular direct question but I was hoping someone could answer a question or two.
I just got word that my brothers Unit is going to receive orders in 2 weeks or so to go over to Iraq for possibly a year. 😢
My brother is not a Cingular customer but I have my sisters old Cingular branded Nokia 6340i GAIT phone I was going to try to get unlocked so my brother could possibly use it over in Iraq with prepaid sims.
Could anyone possibly tell me if this phone has the required frequencies for use in Iraq?
Any ideas on how much my brother might expect to pay for prepaid sims over there?
Any help would be appreciated!

I'm not sure about the cost of the sim cards but I Iraq uses the 900MHz GSM frequency. To my knowledge, the 6340 won't work over there. Sorry

Best bet to get a phone for there (Iraq) is get a Motorola quad band phone. As for prices and availability it will be dependant on where he is. Your best bet is to check out http://www.gsmworld.com and look at the areas in Iraq and then I am sure that will point you in the right direction on where you can find the prices.

Well crud. 😕 Not quite what I wanted to hear. Thank you for the information.

Sorry. I know you'd prefer the truth rather than smoke blown up your fourth point of contact... 😉

True. I was so hoping that this Nokia would work over there so he could use it. I figure it would be much cheaper trying to call back to the USA using prepaid sims than other forms of calling.
Oh well..

I'm showing all the TMo roaming partners in Iraq are 900Mhz as well, so that seems to be the one you need. You can probably pick up a decent used phone on Ebay for not much--heck, a Samsung R225 would work fine and be useful in most of Europe as well.
