Is the iPhone really worth it?

I've worked for an indirect retailer for the past 3+ years. I've carried all sorts of phones but the big mystery for me is the iPhone. I carry the Blackberry Bold and with the exception of a few days with a Curve and and E71x have not had the problems I see reported on this site. I do software upgrades regularly and have not had any major issues. I'm worried that with the iPhone coming to the indirect side that we may be forced to carry the iPhone. I am well aware that the money to be made on the iPhone from a sales perspective is little to nothing, but I still want a good phone to use. My one employee carries the iPhone already and loves it. I can't stand the touch screen and the fact it's an Apple product. I want a device that will...

To this day I still believe the iFad is an inferior device. Always has been, always will. I had opportunities to use them all along the way and I was disappointed each and every time.

When the 2G iPhone came out, the 8525 blew it away for speed and flexibility.

When the 3G iPhone came out the Tilt beat it out for flexibility and call quality. Midway through the year devices like the Bold further pushed the iFad to the back burner for the best device for both entertainment and business use.

The 3GS was simply a brand refresh since they still didn't have MMS, stereo bluetooth and tethering until later on in the year.

And now that the iPhone seems to have all the most current features everyone else has caught up to them on the br...

Actually I have used a jailbroken phone.

That is all I understood from your broken sentance. What were you trying to say?

Bwag and I converse OUTSIDE of phonescoop so you are a bit out of your league here.

The get VZW joke was a joke.

And the fact that you have to hack the device to get it to be "so awesome" for a device that's just supposed to "work" out of the box.. seems counterintuitive

I think it depends on what you are looking for in a device. I would disagree with Tex on the browsing experience, i still don't feel that any device compares to the iPhone for web browsing. Also, the apps are a big reason people flock to the iPhone as well - when insurance companies and restaurant companies are making apps just for the iPhone, you know you have something good.

I used the Tilt, Fuze and the 3G iPhone, and preferred the 3G iPhone. I have also used the new Tilt 2 and still prefer my 3Gs to the Tilt 2. That is just my personal opinion.

From what I gather from his post he really doesn't want to be forced to the iPhone.

You are correct. I don't really want to be forced to carry the iPhone. It is just rumor so far, but I have heard from credible sources that indirect retailers will have to have their employees carry the iPhone. I live and die by my BB and I really only see the Pure as a touch screen phone that would fit my needs. Texas you also spelled iPhad wrong. No "F", just a "PH". 🙂

I would be very surprised if they forced you to carry the iPhone. The company that bought my stores is getting the iPhone and that hasn't been communicated to them.

I am sure the whole "friends and family" refurb option will be available to agent employees just like it is with corporate but I would not be surprised if it is met with the same low response rate as with corporate.

Besides, why would you want to carry a phone that makes so little money?

The iPhunky just doesn't do it for me. Never has, never will.

The way I heard it that if you sell a iPhone on a add a line you will be in the negative $132 (give or take a buck or two). Not sure if it is worth it.

There is also an ESPN radio app. My bank has an app. The apps are a huge selling point for me.

So is that to say that when competing formats get those apps, the i-Phone will have been killed?

It depends on the app. The muti-touch built into the iphone makes some apps work much better, but the big thing going for the iphone isn't platform, it's market share (when it comes to apps)

the phone + the ipod touch makes millions of potential users, and statistically iphone users are more prone to purchase apps/accessories than other smartphone users, so companies are more willing to invest money in the device.

With Android on 3 (soon to be 4) of the biggest carriers in the US, you'll start seeing a lot more app development for it, and several of those app developers are taking the profits from iphone sales and making blackberry/Winmo versions as well. Android might one day compete with the sheer number on the app store, but if an...

A study by DFC Intelligence, released on Friday, predicts that games for the iPhone and iPod touch will be the principal drivers for growth in the overall portable and mobile gaming market in five years. DFC estimates that the overall market will grow by just 8 percent to $11.7 billion by 2014 from $10.9 billion in 2008. The bulk of that will still come from dedicated portable game devices like the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, but that market will shrink by about 27 percent from 2008 over that period. Revenue from iPhone and iPod touch games, however, are expected to soar to more than $2.8 billion in 2014, compared with $46 million in 2008. The Wall Street Journal (Digits blog), online.

Apple’s iPhone got a lukewarm welcome in its official Chinese debut, with a boisterous crowd turning out for a launch party in the capital but no sign of the sort of sellout reception that greeted the device at its introduction in other countries. Hundreds of people attended a Friday night party thrown by China Unicom, but the crowd seemed subdued compared with the thousands who turned up at stores when the iPhone was introduced in markets such as the U.S. and Japan, where it quickly sold out in many locations. As of Sunday night, stores around Beijing still had the iPhone in stock. The iPhone’s performance in China, where the 710 million mobile-phone subscribers are the most in any nation, is potentially important for Apple, which...
