ATT --> Cingular Migration, HELP!!!

Hi,

I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice. I am currently on a local regional ATT TDMA plan in the Bay Area. My contract runs out this upcoming January but I will be moving to Boston this September. I need to switch to a National GSM plan in order to not incure huge roaming charges. Is there any way I can migrate to the Cingular GSM service and NOT sign another contract??? If not, I was thinking that I may just have to pay the cancellation fee.

Thanks,

-Kevin

Well I know if you pick a Rate Plan with no Promo items included(M2M or Unl. Nights and Weekends) then there is no contract for that. Ans you can get those sort of plans as a National plan. But I dont think you get any discounts on phones without a 2 yr. contract. So I think it will still be just as expensive if you cancel depending on what type of phone you want.

Almost true. Unlim N&W is not a promotion for contracts. Only Unlim M2M is considered a 'promotion' for a contract. But, you would pay the 'no commitment' price for a cell; the cheapest one in the NE Region is $100.

I have a few old cingular branded GSM phones. I figure I would just bring those into the store and have them migrate me over.

Would this be ok?

i'm in the GLR, but i know that if you either have a cingular phone previously, or buy a phone outright you can go with a 0 year term....unless they've changed it in the past two weeks...which, frankly, wouldn't surprise me... 😢

The guy at the cingular store told me that since I am migrating FROM ATT that they have to put me on at least a 1 year plan. No matter if I already have the phone. They consider it a favor to the ATT customers to migrate us over without "penalizing" us. I just don't get it. It really annoys me that they go through this merger and then basically force me to switch over and sign another contract.

What to do???

They might be doing this because you still have until January left... The rationalization is that you had to complete that much, it would only be another three months. 😕

And just how are they "forcing" you to switch over?

You might have to buy a SIM, but you should be able to get an account with no contract, unless you want Unlim M2M... 😁

Have you considered a NST? National service transfer?
Get a local Boston # to avoid roaming. However I believe you may lose promos.... Call to make sure

I thought people weren't being forced to migrate yet. Am I mistaken? Won't existing AT&T plans still work, at least for now?

His plan does work. But he is moving to a diff area so he will get roaming with his ATTWS plan which still works
