"Forcing" a phone

repCB

Apr 8, 2005, 10:38 AM
I'm a former blue tdma rep now doing CSE, so i'm inexperienced with gsm. I've heard mention on here before of "forcing" a phone on another network. Would this be the same as forcing an orange phone on the blue network, or vice versa?

I have a CSE customer who is on the orange network but is surrounded by blue towers and cant get any coverage. Is it possible to get him over to blue? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

no way to force it. unless you can rewrite your own IRDB (impossible)

I would suggest the customer to get a 64k sim, they're supposed to make the phone smartly switch between the blue and orange networks. Make sure they don't have a pre merger phone tho, the 64k sims, I don't think work with those phones.

its a motorola mpx220 (everyone's favorite phone 🙄 ) so it should be 64k right?

Dunno, the mpx220 came out pre merger, so if he got it before the merger happened, then the 64k sim won't work. But if he bought it after, then it sould work.

It was after the merger. No other way to do it if the phone is choosing orange network over blue?

Well, there IS a way to manually make it choose a blue tower over an orange one, but i'm not sure how to do it with the windows mobile os.

There should be a network setup option in the setup of the phone. when you go into that option, it will give you the choice to choose certain tower types. Depending on the os of the phone, you should be able to pick cingular over attws towers. This way doesn't always work tho, my phone still randomly switches between blue and orange (mine is pre merger) with it being predominantly orange.

call in to customer care and have them do a load balance to blue, it forces their sim (as long as its 64k) to look for blue first,

Since when do we (Customer Care) have that ability? We were told we aren't allowed, and therefore were never taught how.

I still would suggest a 64k sim anyway. I have an orange rep sitting next to me (I personally am blue) and he informed me that cingular didn't begin to send 64k sims to every market until recently.

What market is the customer in?

Ok, good, this market wasn't 64k until about 2-4 weeks ago. Try sending them that sim, and have them call tech if that doesn't help, tech should know more about manually switching the phone than i do.

as long as he has a 64k sim, call in to customer support, we can usually do what we call a "load balance" to either side, it makes the phone look for at&t or cingular towers first, depending on which side you load balance it to 🙂

regular CSR's can't, all we do is contact our tier 2 techs, they can load balance, it has to be a situation where they get absolutely horrible w/orange or blue, and the other option gives them excellent coverage, if one side is only a little better they won't even bother with it,

Well ours don't seem to bother with it at all. Ive never had a Tech rep do that. They usually brush off the call anyway.

you know, I don't mind that you dislike Cingular; everyone's entitled to their opinions.

What I DO mind, though, is being compared with the Nazi Party. You just offended me, and that, sir, is hard to do.

Unfortunately network intergration is not complete and orange sim cards ares till going to look for orange seervice first. A orange customer that is closet to a blue tower in an area where there is Cingular service AT&T blue is just a roaming partner. Once network integration is complete and all of the towers are considered orange then the customer will have service.

what? 😕
With the new 64k sims, the sim card has the updated IRDB that allows it to look for the strongest tower, whether blue or orange. . . .

that is what is suppossed to ahppen but it is not happening in all markets yet. Most markets are still treating AT&T wireless as a roaming partner. It is a problem network engineers are still working on.

I know the state of michigan has this problem because AT&T is stronger in a lot of areas of detroit. It will get a lot better soon I do not have a list of markets but it is a known issue.
