I confess the Sprint Nextel combo deal caught me off guard. Aside from trying to convince me that the two would merge disparate network technologies, the entire deal seemed to get wrapped up too quickly and tidily to have staying power. The negotiations were one of the industry's best kept secrets in 2004. It was announced and signed off on in a matter of days once the news broke. In disbelief and denial, I assured my associates that Verizon would make a play somehow. However, the days trickled by, and Verizon remained mum.
