GSM for Dummies

repCB

I'm a CSE rep but coming from blue TDMA I know nothing about GSM phones. I've got several questions about 2.5G/3G phones but I can only think of a couple at the moment.

What exactly is "unlocking" a phone? Is this referring to the subsidy lock?

And what exactly does unlocking a phone do?

And how would I unlock it? (as a rep I should have access, right?

Subsidy unlock code, correct. GSM phones are normally locked to a specific carrier. The code allows you to use the phone with any carrier's SIM card or a prepaid SIM overseas.

A normal CSR does NOT have access to get the code, we have to request it from Tier 2 Tech Support.

Cold are you sure its Tier II? I called them about it and they said CSP is wrong that Tier III is who deals with those requests.

you can run a search in CSP for "subsidy unlock request" and it will return policy an procedure, & a form to file. I've had to fill these out before but never actually seen a response to them. the form offers to leave a call back number or a return email address but customers i've spoken to don't ever receive a response..

i wish there was a designated dept that just "dealt" with all the inconsistences that are our structural problems. that would make the day SO much better. I have filed probably 50-60 requests for subsidy unlocks and not once have I received a response.

I have an email address that you send them to as long as they qualify to get unlocked.

Yup! I agree. And once you tell a customer for the third time the only thing you can do is send in the form they escalate ☚ī¸

Jackie, I just got my RAZR yesterday (a very nice colleague bought it for me at full retail), and I wanted to get it unlocked so when I go to Germany in the summer I can get a prepaid SIM and use it over there. What information do I need to have available when I call in to request that they unlock it for me?

I'm not Jackie, but have the original receipt with you. That's technically all you need to have a phone purchased at the no commitment price unlocked.

When you call in to customer service they'll either have to send a request to Tech Support or transfer you to them (likely the first option and not the second), who is the only department who is "supposed" to provide an unlock code. I still wouldn't expect tech support to know how to unlock them though, I've always had trouble with this. ☚ī¸

I'll cut and paste the full requirements in a sec.

NM, I can't paste the exact requirements because the DNS is screwed up on the links our Sales Portal website uses for resources.

You do qualify for it, just be sure to have your reciept at hand.

No, no reps have access to the unlock codes. The cust has to go through the manufacturer and they may provide that subsidy code. This basically unlocks the phone so that you can use different companies equipment together.

Ex: At&t phone w/ Cing sim card

thats funny because when i requested an unlock code i was referred to the manufacturer then i called them and was referred back to my carrier

its the carriers job to get the code for the customer
tmobile provides it promptly. no beating around the bush like att and cingular always has.

Go on the web, look for unlocking services, send them your make, model number and ESN (?) and 5-10 bucks. Some of them want you to ship the phone to them, others send you a series of codes that you have to punch into your keypad (correctly, or else the phone locks up after a couple of tries and you have to take it in to a shop). If you fish around even more you may get the codes for free.
Caveat Emptor. Comments from the new plan old phone from faux something

Don't know if this is true

What about manual network selection? For example, forcing a Cingular phone from the orange network to blue or vice versa, how does that work?
