An easy Way to avoid the "re"-activation fees

When your contract expires. DO NOT RENEW.Stay month to month. Buy a phone off Ebay cheaper then the discounted "subsidized" price at Cingular.

Example
Sony s710a
Cingular $399 w 2 year contract
Ebay as low as $350 unlocked.

If enough people did this. The only incentive to signing a long term contract is the subsidized phones and they are not really subsidized for less than you can buy them for, especially the upper end ones.

This is why I believe the business should be run where you buy he service only and buy the phones at retail outlets at discounted prices which beat the so called subsidy Carriers claim.

Why sign a contract when you can get the better phones for less then the "subsidized" price on Ebay?.

If the subsidys went away you would be able to buy those same phones at even deeper discounts at BEst Buy and Circuit City....evenr Wal Mart.

The Carriers make us believe they are subsidizing the phones for our benefit but they really are not when you can buy the phone for less unlocked. They need the LT contracts. Thats why they "give" away low end phones.

VERY correct. You don't buy the phone from Cingular, then don't expect us to service the phone. Well only take care of your plan side of it.

That'd be great in an ideal world. But unfortunately the majority is too stupid to read a manual or website so they can set up their phone for a specific carrier.

Which is a good thing for the major Carriers. I'm sure they want to keep it that way.

I have the highest bid on one at $425.25 on ebay. Sure, it's a bit more, but you don't get the Cingular support and it comes with added risk. From my experience, on lower end phones at least, is that the market price on ebay is close to the cash price at Cingular.

Remember, you gotta look at the highest bid on the phone to make a comparison. Looking at a lower one gives a false stat since people will go to bid on it instead of the higher one, driving the price up.

There are 43 s710 s on Ebay and I have many on watch and many sold for less than $399. You need to watch them. Your bid is higher than all the current bids on all but one of the phones. I frankly don't see how Im saving $...

Ok dude, cheesy way to start a new thread on the same topic you keep repeating over and over and over.

BTW, you didn't have a reply when I shot down your math about this issue before so I will do it again.

First off, you are using a phone that has flooded the ebay marketplace, so your price is artificially low at this point in time. The phones are not being sold there because their cost is lower and people are willing to accept a wholesale price, they are low because people are dumping their contest winnings. The same can be said for the RAZR and the Z500a. All phones will recent contests from the manufacturers.

Now, if you take a handset any that is NOT being given away as a contest incentive you will find the $$ are not quite s...

I can buy a Sony 710a unlocked on Ebay for 20-$50 less not including the tax savings than the $399 plus tax Cingular wants for it with a 2 year contract. I bought my T637 for less. In fact I have 2 of them.

Thats the example I used.

There are no rate plan incentives with Cingular I know of. ATTWS had those. But with roll over I already have more minutes then I use each month. but as you say even if it is a wash. Month to month is the way to go. There is no incentive in my case to obligate for 2 years.

The deal works for me. Others should do the research and make their own call.I think they would be surprised to find they do not have to sign a 2 year agreement for many decent phones.

Your complete misunderstanding of the market and the process is what astounds me. At least you finally acknowledge that this deal happened to work for you so that is why you support the issue. I am also glad you dropped the wal-mart argument. That also showed a complete lack of understabnding.

"I think they would be surprised to find they do not have to sign a 2 year agreement for many decent phones".

Of course they don't have to sign a new agreement, but if they do they will save money. The vast majority of customers have no problem with the agreement like you have. They would rather save the money. Cingular, and other carriers, are basically saying, "here is $150 to use to buy your new phone, choose as you wish. If you cancel ...
