Hi! I plan on purchasing a phone from a person who posted a ad on a website. How do I know that this phone is not stolen or blacklisted for any reason? Will I have any problems if I buy this phone without knowing this info? He said it is brand new but I dont want to get screwed for $200. Please let me know. THanks.

Unfortunately there really is no way to tell, unless he gives you the IMEI or ESN depending on the phone, but I doubt that he will give the correct one if it is lost or stolen.

And besides you are leaving out some real info, like the ESN or IMEI #, what model of phone it is, the logo on the phone "Nextel" "cingular" "ATTWS", stuff like this we would need

Its a T-Mobile branded phone which I will get unlocked for Cingular. I do not have the ESN or IMEI #. The model is a Motorola A630.

keep in mind the t-mobile a630 does not have the 850 band flashed into the device, so as is it will have some limitations on Cingular.

Have the person send you a digital pic of the IMEI sticker in the back of the phone--this will have the added advantage of showing you the liquid damage indicator (a little round spot right above the label, if it's not white, don't buy the phone!) and if the person is willing to send you this info in this format it will tend to indicate the phone is legit. Then, when you get the phone, make sure the IMEI matches the photo.

Why doesn't my 6230 or my RAZR have this water damage indicator??? And how does this indicator work?

The RAZR should have it--all the Motos have it. The indicator is a moisture sensitive material that changes color when it's exposed to enough liquid to damage the phone. Perhaps it's in a different place on your phone, look around. It's just a tiny round spot, in an undamaged phone it will be white, a damaged one will be pink. Other phones use a similar material for the IMEI label itself that comes out in pink stripes with water damage, it's pretty cool.

Yeah its a good idea to look for that on the replacement phone you got from your carrier and switch it with the one in the phone you dunked and send back.

Its behind the battery on the T637 (tee he he LOL......)
