TDMA and AMPS

I've read that amps has to be kept at least until 2008, but what about tdma? Will the company keep the same footprint for it (for now) or are they turning off large areas of tdma coverage as I write this?

I've got several family members on old tdma nation plans (with ancient nokia phones) and I wondered how long it would be before they might notice big coverage holes, assuming their phones hold out.

For now. Same footprint. But Cingular will be converting TDMA towers to GSM towers as needed for GSM coverage ☚ī¸

Meaning that in the future they could experiance loss of signal where they would normaly get signal.

Now for the bad news, Cingular doesn't release info on its plans for TDMA so "In the Future" could mean next week or 5 years from now. 😕

My best guess and opinion that the footprint should hold for 2 yrs or so. After that it should go down hill. Just my opinion. No official word from Cingular influenced it at all.

Thanks for the heads up man. yeah, they'll keep things the same until all the tdma phones bite the dust then the switchover will be almost 100% done.

I wouldn't, AMPS ia gone by the end of 2006, not 2008, and smart thing is to switch now while the getting is good.

No, all companies, including ones such as Cingular and Verizon, are being required by the FCC to maintain their current analog networks through February 2, 2008. If they don't, they'll be facing some hefty fines.

Found it myself....TDMA is digital, not analog.

TDMA

Time-Division Multiple Access.

TDMA is a digital mobile phone technology. In TDMA, the frequency band is split into a number of channels, which are stacked into short time units, so that several calls can share a single channel without interfering with one another.

Put another way, TDMA allows several devices to share the same frequency band at the same time, by letting each device "take turns" sending digital data. Each "turn" is called a "time slot".

TDMA, as a basic method of transmitting digital signals over radio waves, is the basis for several major wireless standards, including GSM, iDEN, and IS-136. IS-136 is commonly referred to as simply "TDMA".

I wasn't talking about TDMA. I was talking about AMPS which IS analog. Take a look at the title of this thread. Maybe you'll understand what I was talking about.

FCC said they can't shut them off automatically, but they did say that they don't have to be maintained and upgraded. So since Most carriers don't rely on it or even have plans, then its a moot point, as is, ATTWS divested its AMPS bout 6-12 months prior to merger, they sold them to regional carriers.

I remember the FCC site saying AMPS will be done in 2006, but now it says 2008:
