External Antenna Question

Kirby Baker

Been checking out the signal from my new Cingular phone (S/E S710a) and it seems fine everywhere, except when I am in the main floor of my house. I've seen many posts about devices from Wilson Electronics that put an external antenna outside, and a 'repeater' antenna inside to get better signal. Do these work with Cingular? And how would I go about knowing which MHz band my phone is connected to?

From what I could discern, the devices only amplify the 800 MHZ band, and pass through the 1900 PCS band. I dont want to dump out the $$$ for one of these units ($400 or so?) and have it not work. Are there other manufacturers of these units that I should look at? Do any of you have experience with these? Will I still be able to access a...

I have no experience with these devices you are speaking of. However, I have always been told that any type of antenna booster does not really work as they are advertised to do. And $400 seems a little steep for something like that. You may just want to deal with it, or try a Nokia. In my experience, Nokia phones get the best signal reception on Cingular's network.

Hope this helps.

Oh I'm talking about those things you stick on the inside of a phone, those are scams.

Its not life or death, going to keep my S710a phone. I guess from the lack of responses one way or another that I need to ask elsewhere, just gotta figure out where...

Im confused. You DO NOT want to get the sticky things for the back of the phone. If you buy any kind of external antenna, it should only be around $50 or so. $100 at the most.

Holy sh!t. Seems a little extreme for a cell phone. But if that is what it takes, I say go for it. As long as it works and you don't mind dropping that kind of bang just to get your cell phone to work better in your living room.

WOW!!!! My goodness. Might as well have a switch board in your house. There are very similar things out there that cost less, but work the same way basically, just without that box thing. Ill check for ya!

Yeah I dont like the sticker price on that unit for sure! But the theory behind it is exactly what I need. Was hoping to find a version thats $100 to $200 at most. But then I have to figure out if it will actually amplify the right spectrum for Cingular GSM. Is there any way to know if my phone is working in the 800 or 1900 band?

One of the problems with my house is that it sets down in a hole really, and most all signals go right over the top. This holds true for even TV antenna signals. While I can get a decent signal outside on my phone, when I am inside, and in lower level, its just about no signal, which is where one of these repeater units would come in very handy, if they work as advertised.

I would hope he was not speaking of those sticky things for the back of his phone. He did say that the thing he was looking at was $400. If he gets a sticky thing for that amount of cash, I would venture a guess and say that it was a scam. 😈
