LP Research

I work for an independent agent and I am doing some research for loss prevention. We recently had a few phones stolen from one of our stores. As I understand it, an IMEI cannot be tracked unless it is actually called in and put on an account. Is this right? Does the IMEI not automatically change in any systems? This is what a customer service rep told me. Also, is there anyway at all to change an IMEI number in a phone, or is it hardwired? Thanks for the help guys.

An IMEI can be tracked, even if it is not registered on the account, although I don't believe standard departments such as customer care, warranty, and insurance can see them. The Cingular/formerly AT&T Business Security can definitely track these unregistered IMEI's however, and have many times. They will not for an independant agent, but do for thefts from corporate stores, with success.

Ah. So unless the thief calls in and puts these phones on an account, there's now way for us to track them? Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but helpful nonetheless. Thank you.

The reason why GSM phones are stolen so much is becasue people can unlock them and use them on another carrier without anyone from the original company tracking it.

CDMA carriers can simply shut off an ESN number without warning when reported stolen, so no a days those aren't being jack as much.

Hope this helps
