i'm in NC/SC we've always been GSM from the begining, before 850. LV is a coverted TDMA market so you are primarily 850.

How are phones rated on reception of signals? There must be a method besides heresay. Is there a good website to find this information? I am trying to decide between the Motorola v551 and the Nokia 6102. Is there a place where the Motorola phones in general are rated against Nokia, etc?

Honestly, there is no website that rates them, best thing is to really go onto websites like these and read feedback about the phones. The manufacturers dont really like to let you know how good of a quality or how bad their phones are. In my opinion, that nokia phone looks like its going to be a budget phone, a cheap alternative. I havent played with any just yet, but from what I am seeing, its not going to be anything spectacular. I would go with the v551 if I were you, great features and reception on that phone.

As far as function and reception I think Nokia is best, and then Motorola, but as far as feature go, Motorola is first, and then Nokia. Both brands are great and I reccomend them both!

For the phones that are out right now the phones that have the best reception atleat in my market are as follows starting from the best:
Nokia 6230, 6620, 6010.
Motorola V3, V551.
Nokia 3120.
Sony S710a, Z500a.
All the rest i tend to stay away from.

A salesman suggested that I buy a device that would boost my reception no matter what phone I bought. He was too busy to discuss that with other buying customers (Ha!) but does anyone have any comment to that? Does it work on all phones? Are they network specific? How would you know which of them are the best/most reasonably priced for the quality?

Does it work just in a stationary location or also mobile in your car?

no, they don't work. I bought one off of Ebay, fortunately all I wasted was 2 dollars. Basically it is a sticker that you peel off and put on the back of your phone. It is a fraudulant product.
