GSM 900 / Reception

I am having some reception problems with my SMT 5600. I just learned it does not have the 900 band. My reception is occuring while being inside buildings, and my home. Is it possible the problem stems from this phone missing that band?

No. The 900 band is not used in the US. It is reserved for other purposes. That band is used for GSM services mainly in Asia and the Middle-East. So unless you are in Jordan or Hong Kong or some other part of Asia right now, that would not be what is causing your problem.

Initially, all countries with GSM service used the 900 MHz band, except the good ole USA.

Okay, thank you. I think I shall return the phone and try my luck with another SMT 5600, before giving up on it.

I've been told by tech people that GSM signals have more "carrying power", so better for data, clearer conversations, etc, but less "penetrating power" so less range and weaker reception inside structures. If the problem persistes after exchanging phones, maybe a quality external antenna would help. Wilson and others sell antennas specifically for such problems. Expect to pay $40 or more for a decent antenna. These are the real thing, not the silly "cell boosters" sold on TV a while back. The web sites have a lot of tech data and help with choosing the best solution.

There is a frequency chart at near the bottom after the explanation of different frequencies.
