An old Motorola Startech

Ok my dad has a motorola startech. He has been noticing that his service level has been decreasing. He is starting to drop calls and loose those bars. When he originally signed up for this service att had not even started to build its gsm network. So whats the story on this? Are they phasing out the network that his phone uses because i doubt he uses the gsm on it.

Yes we will eventually force those old TDMA customers to convert to GSM or 3G. It's no longer cost effective to keep up the TDMA towers and the dozen or so customers that are still on it. IF YOU ATTEMPT TO DEFEND YOURSELVES YOU WILL BE PUNISHED!!

They will probably do away with TDMA by 2006 or 07 this is when they expect the AT&T towers and CINGULAR towers to be intergrtaed, and when they plan to rollout 3G. Which is stupid because they haven't perfected GSM.

You know that the only reason Cingualr wants to roll out 3G is make money off data services. There is no money in mintues all the money in the future is in data.

Check your contract. Might be a clause where they talk about service dwindling and this being a reason for the ETF to be waived!

You'll get tons of resistance though.

Or like on the old AT&T contract there may be a section that states quite the opposite and mentions that service is not guaranteed.

LIKE I SAID... CHECK!

SOMETHING LIKE

...IF WE MATERIALLY DECREASE THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA IN WHICH YOUR AIRTIME RATE APPLIES (OTHER THAN A TEMPORARY DECREASE FOR REPAIRS OR MAINTENANCE)...

YOU MAY TERMINATE THIS AGREEMENT, BY A WRITING SENT TO CINGULAR’S ADDRESS, WITHOUT PAYING AN EARLY TERMINATION FEE OR RETURNING OR PAYING FOR ANY PROMOTIONAL ITEMS...

I cannot speak to the AT&T process before the merger but TDMA towers are not being taken off-line. There are also not "separate" TDMA towers from the GSM network (although new towers being added do not support TDMA).

The towers that were in existence when Cingular performed their "Genesis" conversion became "tri" technology capable systems. They used GSM, TDMA and Analog. As the GSM traffic increases they slowly convert channels on the tower to be GSM instead of TDMA. They are also phasing out the Analog channels (at this point in time many towers in metro areas do not even have analog channels available). So when they rolled out GSM they might have had 65% TDMA, 30% GSM and 5% Analog on towers they now might look like 80% GSM, 19% T...
