Anyone know th erecemption in the camp? Will VoIP provide better pricing?

Unlocking the phone simply allows him to use another SIM card besides the service provider that the phone came with. It would have been a lot easier for him to get the phone unlocked in the states as I don't have a clue who does it there in Iraq.

Once the phone is unlocked, he can buy a pre-paid SIM card at the PX or Commissary, and call the US really cheap. As for the cost on pp, I would guess 5-10 cents a minute.

As for reception, it should be ok on post, and major cities in Iraq. Rural areas will have little or no coverage. Check out www.gsmworld.com for coverage in Iraq.

Having come from a military household, I appreciate your newphews job to fight terrorism. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Since he has a Cingular phone, he has 2 choices. The first is to keep his US number and roam internationally. The cost per call back to the US is $2.49 a minute. Very expensive!!

Or he can get the phone unlocked and buy the pre-paid SIM card (aka pp). This would get him the cheap calling back to the US. Since he going to be there for "X" amount of time, this is the most cost effective. I have a good buddy in Iraq and he uses a satellite phone. Not too sure on the cost of those....

Depending on what phone he has and how long ago he purchased it, his phone might be unlocked already.

thanks for the clarification! Hopefully I can talk to his wife tomorrow and get more detailed information on the model and if indeed he has cingular vs. AT&T. Either way I am prepared if necessary to deal with the executive team (Sigman, Vega, and Hague)of the corporation. Of course I would rather he already would have been signed up with world connect in which case I would wait the week to get the unlock code. There is no way I will wait three months per cingular policy. AT&T policy does not allow the unlock.

He can punch in the code himself once he is given it.

His tour is 18 months.
