Want a new Nokia Flip & upgrade my plan
The only thing holding me back is, we are both eligible for new phones, but I want a Nokia flip phone. I love my Nokia's, and it's all I want. Yet, I'd like a flip one! I don't see on here that Cingular will be getting one any time soon. I'd be willing to buy one off of Ebay if I had to. ...

The $18 fee is not a "switch to gsm" fee, it's an upgrade fee. Meaning that if you upgrade, you are assessed that fee. Also, I'm not aware of any fip nokia phones, current or recent. Nokia just doesn't do flips hardly at all. You could wait for the new N90 Nokia flip...but that will probably be a while still.....
They are offering (and have been for over a year) Nokia flips overseas. She could purchase one from ebay. I have heard that Cingular will be getting one soon...
if you go onto ebay and buy an unblocked phone as long as it works on the frequencies that cingular offers it can be activated. cingular offers 850/900 1900/1800 if it has those frequecies and the phone is unlocked your good to go
HOWEVER just so you know if u have any problem with a phone and it is a phone cingular doesnt offer or is unlocked we are unable to do any troublshotting and any features you have on ur account may not work to there full benfit

That's funny . . . because I prefer grey-market unlocked phones over the ones that are available through American carriers. The phones available in Europe right now are much better and cheaper than any of the ones available here.
I do think that you are right though that for some one who is not a 'phone geek,' that a grey-market phone could be a really bad idea. The WAP and MMS settings would have to be reprogrammed manually, and for the Nokia 6170, there are two versions available. Both are tri-band, but one has 850 and the other has 900 instead.
