Sending updates and Changing towers

For some reason today, I lost 99% of my service within a 20 mile radius (at least) of my home. By the way, I live about 5 blocks from a tower. I called in and they sent me an update to my phone and told me to turn it off and on. I've never heard of these updates on here, the only place I've heard of them are from when I call into customer service. Are they actually updates, or just a gimick to for me to power cycle my phone? What all do they update.

Also, in a situation like that, where I either have no bars or my calls are disconnected within a minute of connecting, why doesn't the cell phone switch to another provider's tower so I can use it? This could help to keep the calls to customer service down. Maybe a monitor could be set...

Are you calling me a moron because I said power cycling is a gimic (which I didn't, I said saying they're sending updates is), or are you saying power cycling is a gimick, but still calling me a moron, for what reason, who knows?

power cycling your phone will fix 70% of your signal issues .that is not a gimic , if you will turn your phone off at least once a week you wont have to call and get updates because they will happen automatically

I usually turn it off and on daily. That day, I did it about 10 times during the whole ordeal.

if your phone is getting bad signals everywhere you go its your phone if it is just in 1 area ither other
A: the roam agreement with the tower has been retricted
B: the tower is having problems
C: the tower is another competitors and they increased power on the tower to screw our digital customers to make them think we dont have service

I think I am on GSM. I remember having to buy a Motorola V400 so that I can get on a family talk plan with 2 other members in the household. It's just annoying being that I live 5 blocks from a tower.

Updates are not a gimick. An "update" is sending software to your phone in the form of IRDB and ALPHA tags. The tags are what makes your phone function as far as what towers you roam off of, and picking up a Cingular tower automatically, etc. Do you have a TDMA or any GAIT phones?

Actually, I don't think they did. My service went up right before the update was sent. After that, my service pretty much was nothing until about an hour and a half later. I think it's either a tower problem or a phone issue, most likely a tower problem since a friend of mine, that lives about 30 miles from me, said she was having problems also, around the same time. But of course, Cingular won't say what it was. Never has. Whenever I call and ask if there's a problem in my area, they say, nah, it must be your phone, or where you are, and I say, well, all my friends are having the same problems, they live a few miles from me. They say, well, let's just work on your phone, here, let me send you an update.
