Sim card problem??
so he called CS, and was told that its his fault, although he did nothing, they said they can not help him, and as a courtesy they waive the shipping on a new Sim card, which would not arrive until SAT (this happened on WED)
the local stores there cant help him, b/c "NY uses different Sim cards.."
my question is;
1) is that protocol? (does this make any sense?)
2) is there anything he could do to help it? should he maybe restore the factory settings?
(they told him, he must have changed the settings.. which he did not)

that's funny... I took my v400.. I live in jersey.. and I flew to colorado springs...once I got off the plane.. i turned on the phone.. it worked and also they adjusted the time for me. Sounds like the sim card doesn't want to register with phone to the towers. I would call cingular and complain and get credits for it.
it worked for the first 2 days he was in Chicago, then it stopped working..
(this happened right after he got off the phone, with a routine call to CS asking when his billing date was? (etc.)
so maybe they messed up something on his account??
1. He is using the wrong SIM
2. His account was cancelled
3. He tried using some software on his PC to do something to his SIM (i.e. edit phonebook, change settings, etc.) (which is not supported by Cingular)
4. He recently merged his account with another account to create a family talk or for consolidated billing, and his account number changed

Basically what i am saying is there is virtually no reason a phone would just suddenly say "unregisterd SIM" when it had been working fine previously.
My reccomendation would be to go...

I think, the CS rep he spoke to, did something to his account, which everyone is overlooking, (his account is active, but maybe she hit some other wrong button..)

(his sister overnighted him her own cell phone, which happens to be sprint..)
all in all, I know he did nothing at all to his phone, (and this happened while the phone was still on.. and just used for a phone call)
so either 1) that CS rep did something, which...

none of the above happened, he just finshed speaking with someone is CS (asking when his billing date was..) and his phone stopped working.. he's out of town now, in chicago, and the local store there can not help him, due to the fact tht "new york uses diffrent sim cards"
A SIM card can only be programmed in its home area.

That would be one cause of his account being inactive. Another would be deleting or overwriting the SIM # from the account.
None of us can check that. He can ...

the SIM didnt need to be replaced, just needed the download sent to it again.
Unfortunatley for your friend, he cant use the same SIM if he is in chicago, for the reason that he is outside his home area so the download OTA wouldnt get to him, so them sending him a programmed replacement SIM would be the only alternative.
keep in mind, this is not a very common problem, as when i talked to our tech, he was very surprised by what the problem was.
what happens if any of your gsm customers wants to port out from cingular? is the email address [email protected] available for that issue?

Motopaulie-
Why would a port out customer need to have their sim unlocked?? A new sim would be provided by their new carrier since they would be receiving a phone from the new carrier.
