I'm moving to Dallas in the next couple of months. I currently have Verizon in NJ, and I'm very pleased with coverage, reception, etc. Can anyone tell me what carrier has the best coverage in the Dallas area and in Texas in general?

thanks,
Blaine

Verizon has significant coverage deficiencies in the DFW area as well as much of Texas in general. The merger partner here was PrimeCo PCS and had only been around since 1998 or so.

Cingular was formerly SouthWesternBell Wireless and has overall the best coverage in Texas and especially in DFW.

Where are you going to move to in Dallas?

I'll be attending SMU next year. I don't anticipate much travel outside of the region, but I have friends down in Houston, so it is certainly a possibility. I'm not sure about the coverage back home here in NJ, but the coverage maps indicate that its consistent with verizon's coverage.

There's one spot as you travel down 45 from Dallas to Houston where you may loose your signal for about five minutes, or at least there used to be two years ago.

Which company is the best is certainly a matter of perspective, but I haven't had any major problems. If your phone is mainly for personal use then I think you'd be best off keeping whatever company your friends have to make use of any mobile to mobile promotions.

Are you attending SMU or the guildhall at SMU?

As I've heard, verizon has several dead spots as opposed to fewer with cingular. I don't know what people have down in SMU, but it sounds to me like its Cingular. I love Verizon's service, but their phones are terrible. I'll be going to SMU, this is the first I've heard of the "guildhall."

Also Dallas was one of ATT Wirlesses test markets so many areas have umts capable towers. If this will give you any indication by looking at a map, my mom lives in farmersville which is north east of dallas and the mrs parents live in saginaw which is north of ft.worth and I can drive from one place to the other taking several different routs and not have any dead spots. So yes, cingular coverage is very good in the dallas ft worth area and in central and north texas as a whole.

What is the umts technology all about? I've heard a bit about it, but what can it do that regular cell technology cannot?
