Buying a phone on Ebay

My mom ordered a V551 from Cingular and it should be arriving in a few days. I started thinking about it, and it has BT, which I sort of want. I have a V400, and I think it's pretty much the same thing.

The thing I'm wondering about is this... If I decide to purchase it on Ebay, can I still have warranty on it? Will I still be able to do the XBM thing and have Cingular help me if there are any problems with it? I'm just wondering if I'll get the same support as if I had bought it through Cingular. I really wouldn't expect it, since in this case, I'm just paying for the service, not the phone, but just wondering what all I'd have coming to me.

No XBM would not cover it because EBay is not an authorized vendor of Cingular products. Tech Support will still help support network related problems ie: unable to make recieve calls, mms, sms, MEdia Net ect... so get wireless insurance if you get a phone off of EBay.

Ok, that's what I thought it'd be like. One question... If I get the insurance and have to use it, will the new phone then be covered by XBM since it came from Cingular? When I had to do the XBM thing a while back, the phone I got came with a warranty from the manufacturer, I believe. I don't think it will work, but just thought I'd ask.

You are so wrong rogersuser so wrong. XBM will cover phones bought on ebay that are covered by the XBM program which means any phone that cingular carries or has carried. The only restriction is the phone has to be less than one year old. If you do by a phone on ebay it is covered by xbm they even cover the audiovox 4100 a phone AT&T carried that Cingular never supported. Please get your facts straight before posting.

Not to contridict or anything, but how would they know how old the phone is? If it's a year old and I bought it on ebay "new" would they still XBM it? Do they go by the manufacture date or the release date, in a case like that?

XBM warranty starts one year from the time you put the phone on your account with cingular.

So, let's say I get a used phone from my friend and add it to my account and use it as my own, I'd still be able to XBM it for a year(if that's how long the warranty period is) after I add it to my account?

That would work if that phone was not a Cingular phone they do check imei's. ANd if they can determine that that phone is a one year old then no it would not be covered. If you by a unlocked former AT&T wireless gsm phone even if it is more than one year old it is covered under the XBM program.

I do believe that they can tell how old a phone is from the imei.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. My mom's friend has an ATT Nokia that she's trying to get rid of. I'm not sure it's GSM, but, if it is, is there a way of unlocking it and using it with Cingular? My brother has a SE T266 and hates it. I was thinking we could let him have it or something.

I am sorry if that was incorrect. I just finished my Orange training on Friday of last week, this was actually a question that we fielded to the trainer and the answer I left was verbatum what the trainer gave me. Since reading your post I went through CSP and I would like to appologise for the misinfo that was posted. the 4100 was an exception to the rule however since so many blue customers liked them unlocked them and migrated service.
