laptop and phone compatibility ?

John Harrelson

I want to set up my laptop with a cell phone so I can send and receive email and faxes ( laptop has a fax program installed ) when out in the middle of a wildland fire camp with no landline phone service available.

I have looked at several phones and I think the Motorola A845 or the Nokia 6230i are the best choices for this.

Does anyone have first hand experience with either of these phones connected to a laptop ?

I know both phones are ok for using without a laptop, but it is critical to use a laptop in my situation because I need to receive faxes and print them out on my portable printer.

I can't do that from the phone... at least I don't think I can ... can I ?

Please email any replies to me as I likely will be on the road...

well in my experience with morotola and nokia reception wise i would reccomend the nokia

i mean they will both suit your needs.. however motorola can do quicker browsing in any UMTS service area otherwise ull use ur GPRS network, i would probably go with the motorola as it seems to have everything that you need...

do you live in a UMTS market, if your not in an area that has UMTS service I would just go with an EDGE enabled phone so you get fast access on the entire network, judging by the phones that you just asked about I would go with the Nokia 6620 instead of either of those two, it has every syncing and networking option you could possibly need using bluetooth or a cable, you can even get a fax program off the internet for it if you want to go that route.

I agree with you on the 6620 or even the v551 motorola.

Ever try getting a virtual fax mailbox so people can sedn you one anytime and you can download and print at your convenience?

You can then use your phone as your internet connection (or just get a dedicated pc card for internet).
