Vodafone is targeted as a likely buyer since T-Mobile USA uses the same network technology. Vodafone currently has a minority stake in Verizon Wireless, which some analysts believe won't last--they say Vodafone wants to control 100% of a US carrer.
Makes sense. Vodaphone is a GSM company and only has a partial piece of CDMA. By buying T mobile they would own 100% of a US provider and be in their native GSM world with the money to upgrade T Mobile's network They wanted ATTWS....but Cingy outbid them.

Why though? T-mobile is way behind in the 3G race, and though they are growing, their subscriber is base is barely half of their nearest competitor, Sprint/Nextel, too much of a "fixer upper" for them to risk the dough.

Doesnt matter who's behind now. These companies think and act on a long term basis.Cingy paid 41 Bil for lowly ATTWS thinkiing long term.........Vodaphoneey already "own" Europe and GSM technology. They have the money to build out the 3G and buy spectrum. In fact they have nothing but money. How do you think Verizon got where it is? 45% Vodaphone money. Not true. When Vodaphone bought a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless they only had approximately 23 million customers and were #2 behind AT&T. From there on Verizon's customers were organic, not acquired through any buyouts or merges.

There's no way T-mobile is going to gain 20 million plus customers to get in the race with the other "big 3" with just good customer service, they need more to offer, which they really don't have.

Dont kid yourself..Those companies Verizon bought were not very big at the time. I see Vodaphone picking up the rest of the SUNCOMS and other regional GSM carriers. As well they can grow their business on the back of Cingys terrible Customer service as well as Sprint and Verizon. DT has held back T Mobile due to cash concerns....not so with Vodaphone
I do not see Cingy improving in CS as there are too many disgruntled ATTWS customers and especially employees (see Phone Scoop, Howard Forums etc) and whenever there is a UNion involved there is a schism between management and employee causing in effect two companies under the same roof and opposite goals. In this case union rep is hurting Cingy employees...The happy Verizon employees are evi...

I am a union customer service rep for Cingular. I agree that Cingular CS is pretty bad and needs a lot of work. the main problems are not related to the union it is poor no Carrier path for customer service Rep position and poor pay. This causes more good employees lo leave Cingular and go to other companies. A lot of former Verizon and T-mobile people used to work for Cingular. The union is not hurting Cingular CS Cingular is hurting their own customer service. Verizon is a different situation because their pay level is high they attract and keep the best reps.

Cingular wireless decided around 4 years ago that they did not care who answers the phones as long as they get answered. they wanted the most calls answered at the cheapest rate possible. They eliminated the senior rep positions and lowering the starting pay. Cingular till recently thought as long as the calls get answered and they do not get fined they do not lose money.

I am a noob here, but I am glad to see the union reps speak up. The union is getting a bad rep because of the bad management style, higher monthly charges and misaligned business practices of Cingular management.
Unfortunately, from now until the end of time, many will blame the union for the plucked up cs scripts and non-flexible style of the cingular management...

I doubt that. If management was so bad, people would quit and go to the NON union CArriers for a better deal. What is the union doing for you guys except furthering their cause by amolifying the schism between you and "management" in order to keep taking your dues, yet you are the lowest paid in the industry and are collectively unhappy......becasue of collective bargaining you are paying dearly for?
