In the last 2 months I have been told 6 different early termination fees.
First i Was told 240.00
then i was told 100.00 if dont before June 28
then yesterday i was told 150.00
i called today and was told 40.00
the store told me 80.00
called back and was told 30-50
the guy even told me to go to the store and buy an antenna booster and fax my cingular receipt to him and he would credit my account for the purchase. Well they dont sell signal boosters at cingular stores. What is going on here?!!?
The last lady when in detail to explain why its 40.00 so should I assume its 40.00?

It all depends on your market...to be safe, get someone's name, employee number, and manager's name and make sure they tell you specifically that "I have noted your account that your etf is X dollars." Even if it should be 500.00, and someone specifically noted that it would be 5.00, they would have to honor it.

well i think the lady noted my account cause she had me wait while she was typing, then made me approve that no changes were made to the account. Its just weird. I live in NY where the 240.00 is prorated and adjusts because i have a 1 year contract i guess. Any ideas?

Okay, if you're in New York, it should, like you said, prorate from 240.00. It'll go down by 20.00 per month as you get into your contract. So, if you've got two months left on your contract, it'll be 40.00. I service New York City and it's on the same system as the South East, which is the prorated system.

the thing is i have until december 28th. So why is it 40.00? the lady even said the second time i called its between 30 and 50 dollars depending on when i cancel she said. I just dont get it haha. Im all for paying 40.00. But I dont want a 160.00 termination fee if i port, know what i mean?

If you're under contract until December 28th, then I have no idea why she would quote you 40.00...unless you were originally under a two year contract...are you sure you had a one year?
...
yes i had a 1 year contract i even made her look.
...
Cancel now and pay the $40. $40 is cheap, and if they're saying it, take it. Then just go month to month until you're ready to switch. I wish they'd prorate it here. I don't see how they can justify charging $200 in lost profits (which is all they're allowed to collect) when I have 2 months of $40/month left on my contract, and they probably only get $10 of profit.

well I am going to call and ask them one more time and have them fax me a letter of some sort stating it. Then decide where I want to go. I want Verizon but the phones suck, and I like T-Mobile service. So we will see what happens.
...
And what's wrong with Cingular? I've been happy with them for the past 5 years. The only reason I'm thinking of switching is because of a discount I get with another carrier.
...
I dont get good reception at or near my house since I am close to the border to Canada. Only T-Mobile and Verizon do.
...
Ahh. That's a good reason. I hope the switch is worth the savings. Although, everyone I've talked to that's on Sprint has pretty much no complaints.
...
my bro has sprint and wants to add me on to his plan, im not so sure about a 2 year agreement though, im too picky about phones to have the same one for 2 years. I wouldnt want to do that to him. I think a better phone with Cingular will also relieve some of the problems, some of the poor quality is my actual phone, the remainder is the poor signal. I want to know when this new Nokia flip phone is coming out.
...
Why not just sign up for a 1 year plan then, or just go month to month (you'll have to pay $10 extra/month for doing that). Although, I think when you add a line, you have to go 2 years. I have another year before I switch, so I'm hoping new phones will be out by then.
...
well the whole point was for my brother to add me on to his plan but that requires 2 years. If i was to stay on my own id go with T-Mobile or Verizon. I really liked T-Mobile but the coverage area is small and I get a discount with Cingular, which isnt even worth it once you pay for text messaging which is double what it was at T-Mobile. Right now its pretty much based on phone selection, t-mobile, sprint, and verizon all work well here, cingular is in last because it cant compete with the canadian signal for some reason.
