"de-branded" phones

does anyone know....

in BEUC (blue) we were told that since the merger, the phones listed as "de-branded" or under "both (orange/blue)" on our grid could be uses on either blue gsm or orange system. (ex- moto v551, moto razr and others) So if a blue cust decides to upgrade right now and keep his blue plan and gets a v551, if he decides in a couple months to migrate to cingular he only needs a sim card and cingular plan- the phone can go over. Now, I had a cust call today stating that he went into a store to migrate and they had no problem migrating him, but they told him that there was no way he could use his (att) debranded Mot v551, he would have to get a new v551 @ 74.99 (when he bought his current one for 99.99 4 months ago. this goe...

Our order sheets have devices specific to Blue and Orange, so I don't think they work between carriers. We tell our customers that Blue devices will not work on Orange, because that's what we've been told and because we've swapped SIMs and seen that it doesn't work.

What we do NOT tell the customer, because we're not supposed to, is they could take their phone 5 blocks down the road and pay a different store $18 to have it unlocked and then it would work.

it's wierd how we are all given such different information thru the reatil and care locations. I asked the same question just now to my Team Lead and he told me that yes, if the phone is de branded then it can be used on cingular's system without being unlocked. it even says it in our policys for migration. BUT I do believe what you're saying because clearly there are some problems with this as I just had a customer call in stating he was told pretty much exactly what you just said. Any one else have any input?

From my understanding, when we say "de-branded" all we mean is that there are no AT&T logos on the phone, and it does not wake up with the AT&T globe. The guts should be EXACTLY the same as a "branded" AT&T phone. Sounds like some folks are getting "de-branded" and "unlocked" confused.

the reason they are "debranded" are becasue there still locked to the former att network however it is no longer legal to display the former att logo on anything as att wireless is no longer a company

ah, now THAT makes sense to me. I think we could legally stick "Former AT&T" on it though, right? I guess there really is a distinction between de-branded and un-branded.

We cant use the words "AT&T" So former AT&T would not cut it.

We were instructed to refer to them as "Former AT&T Customers". It's sad and funny. We can say "Are you a former AT&T Wireless customer?" or "What is your former AT&T Wireless account number?", but under no circumstances can we ask "Were you formerly with AT&T Wireless?"

Apparently there's a legal distinction between the words "former" and "formerly". Go figure.

My market is one of the few that did not merge. So, I get to say about a million times a day "You have to go to Alltel wireless because we did not combine this area" Then it turns into a 20 minute conversation about the FCC rules.

What I don't tell the customer (because by this point their already mad at me {like it's my fault??!!}) is that Alltel runs off CDMA technology so if they do go there to get a new phone, Alltel won't sell them anything because they're shutting down all GSM systems and converting to CDMA.

It's a MAJOR pain in the a$$ 👿

Hey well I am in the retail store here in midtown manhatten and I have noticed that the debranded cingular phone is subsidy locked to former attws sim cards. it already has all the setting for both cingular and att accounts. WHat i have done to resolve this is to submit a unlock request to the simunlockcode team. it takes from 1-3 business days and then they are fine. hope that helps.

How do we get in touch with the simunlockcode team? We were told to contact teir 2 tech support for subsidy unlock codes, but after several failed attempts at getting anything useful from them I gave up on that. The last I'd heard from them, they were aware that the responsibilty fell upon their department but that no one had yet told them how to do it.

Hooray!

instead of using the new templette that is in CSP, I use the older version. It was a cut and paste job. I simply state that a att" debranded" v3(in my most recent case) was accidently given to the cusotmer for migration. I confirmed it was subsidy locked to former att sim cards only. All this is stated in the "reson for request" point. For this type of case I will usually get the code in a few hours. otherwise it is 3 bussiness days. below is the templette I use. however do not send from home adress. they do check to make sure you are an employee. hope that helps.
