heres my problem. i had a messed up sony ericsson t237. the keypad wasnt working. I dont think it was damaged by water. It had never been near water. so i did a warrenty exchange thing online at cingular.com and I got my replacement phone. I havent shipped the other one out yet. If it ends up being damaged by water what will happen? If it is, then i wouldnt mind returning the replacement. Will i still get charged a processing fee. How much is the processing fee? I dont think I should be charged a processing fee if it was damaged by water because I didn't know. The phone was not wet or showed signs of wetness so yeah.. again this is just a what if..
THANKS!

Liquid damage can happen in many ways other than being dropped in water. Condensation is a major cause of liquid damage.
Check the exterior and all contacts (battery, charger leads, etc) for corrosion. That should give you a decent idea if it is or not.
XBM has those stipulations. You don't have to use it. You can send your phone to Sony Ericsson or take it to a nearby service location (most major cities have one or two) and they will check it first and give you a quote if the unit has damage not caused by manufacturer defect.

if you don't return your defective device, you will be billed the entire cost of the new device. if you are a consumer customer there is a charge to do a warranty exchange however if you are a business customer the fee is waived. there is a special piece of paper that is in the phone that indicates weither there has been liquid damage and when the manufactor checks that it will be yah or nei to liquid damage, if they find liquid damage you are billed the entire price of your device

??????
There is no "special paper" in phones that determine if their has been liquid damage. What if the phone is put in a cup holder and only the contacts get wet and cause corrosion, what does the "paper" do then?
There is also no charge for XBM, consumer or busniess. Please be properly educated before you speak or clarify if you are just guessing.

I thought SE put Lithmus stickies on the inside of their phones? Litchmus, lithmus, lithmuss? Need to flip over to dictionary.com, wait a sec...

That could be possible, but I don't believe it is done industry wide and it definately isn't a catch all test either as mystery dude above contests.
If you drop it in the toilet fine, but if it gets hit by a sprinkler blast (or something else that doesn't saturate the phone) that kind of test does no good.
It also doesn't apply to GinoA's question of "I didn't get it wet" but isn't sure. Lot's of ways to get liquid damage without soaking your phone and getting paper wet.

Indeed. I found in the past a lot of people who had phones in holsters would play in the rain and that caused a hooey because they would say, "I didn't get it wet." or "It hasn't been anywhere near water."
WATER = WATER, RAIN = (well, I can't think of anything funny) NATURE or NATURAL
...
Very true.
One of the other top reasons for water damage is setting your phone in your cupholder after a drink was recently there. Condesation collects on the warm battery and POW. Your phone starts corroding and you never "got it wet".

In most phones there's a little white circular sticker that turns red when it gets wet. There's usually one just under the battery, and one inside the casing on the board. I've also seen white circles with purple x's that just blur when wet instead of turning red.
...
thank you for clarifying that

Can you tell me any of the current models that use one of these indicators? I want to see one of those for myself.
Thanks

The Moto v180 has one right below the battery if you remove the battery cover. If you're looking at the back cover it's just above the bottom left screw, and there's usually another one inside.
On the Samsung x427 I'm looking at, it has three of the purple x's on white on the inside of the back faceplate and one on one of chips on the board.
On the Nokia 3120 I'm looking at, I don't see one at all.
...
Ahhh, ok
It would be nice if the indicators were more available on the outside of the equipment like the V180. Would save some hassles with XBM beforehand.
...
also, on the Z500, if you look at the bottom left corner if the SIM card holder, you'll see a white spot. if it turns red, its bad.
Many Nokias are starting to come with the same indicators as the Motos (white dot). i've seen them in all the recent 6010's
LG's have a white dot "hole" with the pink 'x"'s behind the battery, normally towards the bottom of the phone, and most LG models also have the same hole on the battery as well.

It doesn't have to be near a large quantity of water. It could be any liquid: rain, condensation, high humidity, sweat, etc. A little bit can go a long way in causing problems with your phone.
