New flip phones coming?

My Verizon contract is (finally) over this month, and I'm switching to Cingular. Everyone I call on a routine basis is on Cingular, so with their M-to-M it makes sense.

The only problem is that I don't really like any of their current flip phones. The v551 is the closest thing to what I want, but frankly the front cover looks cheap as hell, and since I'm gonna have it for two years, I want the latest possible model.

Does anyone know if they plan to introduce any new flip phones in the next month or so? I read something about them getting the v635, but haven't seen it on their site yet.

Wasp,

Cingular has the following flips to be launched with-in the next couple of months:

Samsung X497
LG C1500
LG C2000
Nokia 6102

The V635 is NOT comming to Cingular. It tested poorly with signal degredation. I have an unlocked version and I love it. I wish it would have been picked up.

Yes, having free M2M to over 51 million people is nice. Welcome to Cingular.

It was on Cingular's July price list, along with a big TBD next to it. I haven't seen August's list yet. My guess it around $149 on a 2 year and $249 without.

Ok, moron alert here, but I have been wondering how the whole "unlocked" phone thing works. If I buy one on ebay, how do I get service on it? What does it mean when they say it doesn't have a sim card? If I get one, will all the features work?

Verizon was all CDMA/analog, which means you never got a SIM card (Subscriber Identification Module.) GSM uses SIM cards which makes it easy to change phones if yours breaks. When you sign on with a GSM carrier, they give you a SIM card to put in your phone.

On ebay when they say that a phone does not have a SIM card, that means you need to use your own SIM card in the phone you get from ebay. "Unlocked" means that a phone has had it's carrier restrictions are turned off so you can use any SIM card regardless of the carrier.

for example. I have the Motorola V300 with T-Mobile, and my phone was locked with T-Mobile so I could ONLY use it with T-Mobile. But I just had it unlocked, and now if I wanted to use a Cingular SIM card in it...

If you buy an unlocked GSM phone that was originally not a Cingular phone and you chose to use it with Cingular, you will be able to use it to call and text message, but you won't be able to use the mobile internet or to download anything because the phone has the wrong software. I have used Cingular phones with T-Mobile, and I had no problems sending and recieving calls and text messages.

I have an unlocked Motorola v635 which wasn't a Cingular phone and I can use mobile internet and most (if not all) of the other features of the phone.

and the carrier will not unlock your phone, you have to either go to a third party or find a service through the internet

The V551 cover may look cheap, but it has the rubber blue around it, which makes the phone pretty sturdy. If I were going to join Cingular, I would choose the V551, I think it is one Cingular's nicest phones, and a lot of people have it, so you will be in style!

The V557 is supposed to come out in 3Q... I've heard it looks essentially the same just black instead of purple.

If the v557 is coming to Cingular, I may wait for it. It's the silly "ridges" and plastic "chrome" on the v551 that I don't like - both do not seem to appear on the v557.
