Huge network upgrade/expansion for Cingular!
http://cingular.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=press_rele ... »
They are going to drop more than $6 billion on the network before the end of 2005. 😳
1 billion in California alone. They're adding 730 new cell sites in the state.
Other expansion include:
Indiana
Georgia
NY/NJ
Tennessee
Kentucky
Oklahoma
Arkansas
Philadelphia
Texas
North and South Carolina
Cingular is claiming they will have 40,000 cell sites by the end of 2005. 😳 Definately keeping the promise of the 'Allover Network'.
If I'm not mistaken, this is part of the GSM/EDGE expansion that they contracted Nokia to do. The articles specifically said GSM/EDGE so this doesn't even include the 15-20 cities that will have UMTS/HS by the end of 200...

whats a "cell site", a tower?
Cell Site:
The location at which communications equipment is located for each cell. A cell site includes antennas, a support structure for those antennas, and communications equipment to connect the site to the rest of the wireless system.
I am surprised at North Carolina, large chunk is divested to SUNCOM
NOT TRUE.
Cingular in NC already had coverage in all of NC. They swapped the old AT&T market to SunCom for SunCom's Virginia market. This gave SunCom coverage in all of NC; whereas before SunCom piggy backed on AT&T to cover the state.
It was a good deal for SunCom and a better deal for Cingular.

They actually already have 45,000+ cell sites, but maybe that 40,000 is indicating the cell sites that will actually be integrated and dubbed "Allover".
If you look at the articles in the newsroom, they are going to add around 1500-2000 cell sites by the end of 2005. One of the articles said they would have more than 40,000 by the end of 2005 and more than 45,000 by the end of 2006. I think Cingular has that many cell sites now, but not entirely GSM. Not only that, I'm sure they had to divest a few thousand during the merger. So, yeah I think we are both right here.

hey, thanks , bluehfx 🙂
Hey np anytime. But at least Cingular is still there and they most likely will expand.
Not true. Cingular towers are still in a lot of NC. The old AT&T towers were taken over by SunCom. Add the existing SunCom towers, which were changed to GSM in June 04; plus, add in the NEW GSM towers put up by both SunCom and Cingular and you are beginning to see very good service in NC. I even got coverage in Mt. Airy...phone said SunCom. I used to run out of AT&T service just 20 miles North of Winston Salem...GSM service is really kicking now.

but the worst part is that my store is going to be selling cingular come 1/1/06 so i am hoping that they drop a few towers around this zip code on my trip last night there was a 30-35 mile stretch where there was no signal at all let alone in both towns i visited last night there was nothing so i am really hoping they do something in this area.
is there a way to get someone to come out and check the signals or is that a slim to none long shot? or are they just going to go by what attws had said there was coverage..
thanks again Bluehfx

Jon,
I have SunCom and Fayetteville has good GSM coverage...switch to a Nokia phone.

what about Haymont area?
Think posted on your zip i forget what was it? much of NC the former attws side is divested so the only coverage is from cingular itself. any network integration may not help and in a divested market it will not help. sorry.

Hey, any idea what cities Cingular will turn 3G UMTS/HSDPA on in initially? I'm in NYC, and am wondering if it'll test here. Also, is there any way to volunteer as a tester for when they do turn it on?
Thanks in advance . .
Sorry really have no clue if they launch it. you need to buy am umts device.
