Phone insurance?
I have had my first phone Samsung 426 for almost two years and its still working OK. But I am getting ready to replace my phone and am curious about what your experience has been re: phone insurance. Is it really worth the price? I am planning on getting the new Nokia flip phone. Are different brands more durable, not as risky? Does the 'flip' phone matter - more insurable problems? I have friends that have the old regular Nokia phones and have had them for years with no problems. I am just wondering if its really worth the price of insurance, or are you better off just keeping the premium and covering any potential loss yourself. I know Consumer Reports in general does not think insurance on appliances for example is worth the price...

i strongly believe in insurance. i've talked directly with the cingular store and from personal experence. phones get lost all the time. a lost, damaged, or defective phone is expensive to replace. most new phones range from $200ish to $500ish retail. so if somethin happens to it, its better to pay the $50 and recieve a replacement.

most appliances (fridges, toasters, etc) aren't taken outside and moved around alot. The flip phones are always more vulnerable to mishaps due to more moving parts. If you are concerned, ask what the no contract price on the phone you are buying and ask yourself if you'd be willing to pay that lump all at once.

Insurance alone is $4 a month with a deductable of $50.
If you use it for a year and make one claim, that cost you $98.
If you use it for two years and make one claim, that cost you $146.
Depending on how long you've had your phone and what the cost is, it should save you at least $50 but sometimes as much as $200.

I personally think consumer reports is a load of hog wash. They probably look at discount pricing and not the retail price of the device. after a year or two you get discount pricing. after 3-6 months you do not and if have insurance and high end phone or mid end phone it can save load of cash up front. Question is if you lose or break it do you have the cash up front to buy a new phone? if not then insurance is a good idea. if you never wreak your car have an accident or get your car stolen is car insurance a good or bad idea? it a lot of money if something happens though but it might never happen. Insurance is the same on anything can you afford to replace the product if something falls out side a warranty or if the product gets stolen.
