Wideband CDMA??

Does anybody know anything about the coming changeover Cingular appears to be approaching in going from GSM to wideband CDMA? The reason I'm asking is because in this month's Cargo Magazine a cellphone industry analyst reviewed the $11,500.00 Vertu Signature phone (stainless steel with 18K gold keys) which is a GSM phone compatible with Cingular or T-Mobile. He stated that this phone's technology (GSM) would be obsolete in about 8 years to make way for wideband CDMA. Would that mean that Verizon may have the technology edge over us in the coming years because they already have the basic CDMA?
