questions switching from AT&T to Cingular

I’m an AT&T customer and my contract is about to expire. My reception is horrible. Calls drop all the time and my phone shuts off, then turns back on. My AT&T phone is a Panasonic GU87 (you can stop laughing now). I hate the phone, but it was the only flip camera phone at the time and this has only been an issue for the last 5 months! I also have a Nokia 3200 (has broken 3 times in the last 18 month) and Samsung phone (not sure of the model). I’m thinking of rolling into a Cingular plan.

I have a few questions:

Will I be able to transfer numbers saved to my sim card to the new phone without doing it manually?!

Will I be able to take my downloaded rings to my new Cingular phone?

Is there a site you guys go on to check r...

Ask the Cingular rep to show you the reception coverage on their computer where you are interested in - ie home, city, work, etc. And I would agree its the phone especially with the ATT towers/old phone vs
Cingular towers/new phone

I didn't know they could show reception coverage! Thanks, I'll check that out! I knew the Panasonic phone was crap, but since it's the same issue with the other two, i wasn't sure. So it is an issue of old equipment on an update network.

Thanks, you and simplymarcus have been a big help!

numbers can be transferred... go to a company store and we can use the hand held computer to transfer them. we do it at least once a day for migrating customers (att-cing)

yes you will be able to get ringtones (either polyphonic or mp3 depending on the phone)

yes, placing the old sim in the phone will allow you to move the numbers over.

Will I be able to take my downloaded rings to my new Cingular phone?
unfortunaly no, that's just something that can't be moved 😢

Is there a site you guys go on to check reception that I can access?! I am in NJ 08046.
Yes, the GSM coverage is good in that zip code

I didn't think I could take those rings with me, but I figured I would ask.

I am very enthusiastic about switching over!

Thanks 😁

Only problem is the phone book issue if the phone is locked it cannot be done because it will ask you for a subsidiary code.

It is the unlock code everyone wants for their phone. the phone will as for that code. only problem is you cannot get the former attws codes from the former attws. you have to get them the shady way.

Only if you find a retail store that has a CelleBrite transfer machine.

Will I be able to take my downloaded rings...

Actually, I'm not rough on the phones at all. All 3 Nokia phones were still covered under warranty. I didn't have to pay for replacements because they didn't find I did anything to damage the phones.

Also, if I'm spending $200 on a phone from a reputable manufacturer and carrier, I expect the phone to "make and receive calls". In fact, I expect ALL phones to do that, since that is what they do. The GU87 did it in the beginning as well. Everyone wants a good looking phone, that's one of the reasons there are so many to chose from.

I hope you can help on that issue, How do I pick my next phone, based on quality? I've been on the posts and from what I am reading, it's word of mouth.

Thanks for the great info (I'll check i...

I have heard great things about the new Nokia 6102. Our store should have them by the end of this month...I will post when I have real world experience. The Nokia 6170 has been working well for me.
