Nokia phone reports "Roaming"

Hello. I have, in addition to my normal Cingular phone, a Nokia 5190 I keep for backup purposes. It's been unlocked (which I verified), but strangely whenever I put my SIM in, it finds the signal but tells me I'm roaming. From what I gather, I'm connected to AT&T (US 3😎 and Cingular doesn't seem to be billing me for roaming, but the message still appears. I've also connected my T300 from T-Mobile using the same SIM and get no message at all. Has anybody seen anything similar before? Thanks!

Sorry about the smiley above; I meant to say the network it tells me it's connected to is "US 38."

US 38 sounds like the name of a tower, probably the one it's picking up. It is Cingular though, I believe. It's probably not sending the name through though for some odd reason.

As for the roaming, the phone original programming is probably just used to using the other service provider, and when it senses another one being used, like Cingular, it thinks it's roaming. This is probably totally incorrect but hey that's my guess ok so step off.

Older handsets such as the 5190 don't have the current software to "translate" the commands from the tower and therefore display the wrong "banner". Another thread on here once asked why does Cingular "advertise" on their phone. It is just the info coming from the tower.

Roaming is determined by your rate plan, not by the messaged displayed on the phone.
