Handset insurance

Good morning everyone. I lost a handset this past friday due to a burglary of my apartment. It was a silver Razr v3. Gone. I have a black Razr v3 and want to insure it. Just got off the phone with Cingular business care and they will not insure it. A phone of this value was insured with the former AT&T (I really miss their customer-friendly policies): a v600 which at launch cost $199 (same price for black Razr) and I was able to insure it after 7 days. My question: is there anyone here with knowlege on how to insure this handset outside of Cingular? I find it amazing that they break their neck to seel you this phone but offer you know way or information on how to insure it. Any help is greatly apppreciated and thanks in advance for your help...

The RAZR is insurable in my region. Unless the business channel offers different handset insurance than the small business and consumer channel you should be fine.

Business care told me 'No." How is it insurable in one region and not all?

Business accounts have different offerings that are sometimes custom to each individual company. Perhaps your company chose to not offer insurance(?). How big is your business account and have you tried calling regular customer care to add it?

Also, have you migrated to Cingular's orange side or do you still use the same ATTWS (blue) account? If you still have your blue account that is why it cannot be added. The new insurance that came out in late July was only available to orange side customers (according to the product release documents).

My company is fairly huge (JPMorgan Chase), but I am still using my blue account; and yes, I only called business cust care and not reg cust care. I feel that even if I did, like in the past, they ALWAYS switch me back to business customer care. And if its after hours forget it... I will take your suggestion though and see what happens. I'll keep you poasted . . . 😁

Yeah, I think you may be out of luck if you still have a blue account. Everything I have read indicates the new insurance options are for orange only.

Yes, no new insurance adds on the Blue side after July 25th. Biz or otherwise

Cingular does insure the RAZR phone, but didn't' for the longest time. Refurbished phones (the one's customers return within the first 30 days) are the ones the insurance gives when someone makes a claim. For a long time there were not enough refurbs out there to offer for insurance. That's why the black RAZR phone is replaced with a silver one through insurance. There simply aren't enough out there. I imagine that this is the case with your phone. You either have an AT&T locked RAZR or an unlocked one. Either way I can guarantee that there are hardly any of them out there.

I actually have a Cingular unlocked Black one. Bought it a a reseller near my job. He sold it to me for $199 and unlocked it for free (I hooked him up with a SEEM edit to enable video recording for his customers). Came in that hideous blue and orange box. But you might be right, because when I called all they have in the notes is the second silver one added to my account after a warranty exchange . . . I'll look into this

This is the other thing You cannot get insurance on the blue side anymore but to have gotten it it had to be supported device and since this is an unlocked orange phone it would not be able to be insured on the blue side. Remember it is not cingular that says what quali...

Cingular is not aware that the phone is unlocked. That is completely irrelevant. It has more to do with the fact I am blue and they want to try any measure to get me to switch to orange. To wit: spoke with blue rep this morning and they told me the only way to get insurance is to migrate. So this phone will remain uninsured. I'm sorry but the orange plans bite.

Orange may not know it when you call and when you call xbm or now wsc we do not know but when you return your phone representatives for the manufacturer check the phones. if the unlock did not cause any problems they may not care but it can matter. Also the manufacturer can see what accounts the phone was on so if they saw that it ...

You can always try adding the phone to your home owners insurance or renters insurance if you have it, a lot of policies allow you to add things like phones, or other valuables, and then if you lose it make a claim through them, just a thought,

Yes, it is a good suggestion, but is it worth putting a claim on your homeowners ins. for a $400 phone? Let's say you make the claim and the premiums go up $300/yr b/c of that one claim. Well, after 1.3 years, you've already paid for the phone, and anything after that is extra money out of your pocket. How about self insuring? Putting money aside each week. This will help to cover the cost of the phone and after a certain amount of time, you'd have money saved up for the next one.

I think the question, "To insure, or not?" has only very individual answers. Just one opinion though, you paid a (lot) less for the replacement? A phone is just too easily lost or stolen. Seems to me that insurance on cellphones is a temporary need, probably useful only for 6 to 9 months. Since it must cover all losses ... theft & carelessness ... it would be extremely costly on the latest, most desireable models.

Besides, I'm ready for a change after a year anyhow, so I prefer to self-insure ... I'm pretty cautious with a new phone, keeping it belt-clipped. But as months wear-on, maybe carelessness has its benefits? I only ever lost one phone, an early Moto left in a taxi. They weren't "pocketable" back then. Good riddance! 🤣

the insurance is only a few extra dollars a month, Something between 5 and 10 if I recall. I have no issues paying that, as I want to be covered for any circumstance.

4.99 is for full coverage adds extended warranty 3.99 will get you reg equipment insurance in the past on the all over network as they put it now the orange side is the only place to get new insurance.

The 3.99 doesn't cover mechanical or electrical issues whereas the old insurance did, just to clarify.

To further clarify if the failure was not a manufacturers defect or out side the one year warranty the insurance covered it but if within its one year and a defect it did not correct.
