Amazon question
I already did a search on this, but the thread was huge and full of rants, so it was difficult to find out any useful information. I don't want to start the whole "which is better" debate...I'm just looking for some facts and this is the best place to ask with the most knowledgeable people. What I would like to know, however, is what is the disadvantage, if any, with purchasing a phone and contract from Amazon (besides the current lack of number portability)? Can I add additional options later, like insurance? Can I walk into a Cingular store with my phone and get a software upgrade, if needed?
Thanks
Brian

well, hate to break it to you, but stores cannot do software upgrades in my experience. i went in to get my v551 upgraded, and they told me they did not have the ability to do it.

Was that because you purchased it via Amazon (or another store) or is it that they can't do the upgrades period? Those are two very different things. I'm basically looking for any differences between purchasing a phone from Amazon and from a Cingular store. I just used the software upgrade as an example.

Stores cannot do software upgrades unless they are an authorized repair center for the handset brand you carry, regardless of your place of purchase.
Depending on what you save it is possible to get the same deal at a local store. You can then find someone to help you with future needs and will not have to give up number portability.
For many people establishing a good long term relationship with a store saves them time and money over anything they may save up front.

I was looking at the exact same phone that Cingular sells, the Razr. Amazon has a great deal on it. They also said a few months ago that number portability was supposed to be in place for Cingular on their site in Sept.
