porting number question

Hello all,

I have a question regarding a port that I am planning to do. I'm planning to port my number to Cingular, but I will be bringing my own unlocked GSM phone. If I join a plan, would I still have to pay an early termination fee???

Thanks.

yes. the early termination fee is in the service contract and has nothing to do with the hardware. you can't get service without subjecting yourself to that clause in the contract.

Sooo...if you bring your own hardware, and you are not getting a subsidized phone, what is the ETF for again?

Hmm...yeah, his post is a little unclear. Not sure if he meant ETF from Cingular if he were to change his mind. Or if he means an ETF from his previous carrier.

He meant ETF from Cingular, and it wouldn't apply since he's bringing his own phone.

I meant ETF for Cingular, not my old service... So one person says it applies, cubbie1423 are you saying it doesn't?

It shouldn't. You are bringing your own equipment. ETF is to recover the cost of the subsidized phone should you not fulfill your agreement.

OK, when are you talking about an ETF? I'm saying if you opt for cingular service, then decide to cancel in 7 months, yes you will face cingular's ETF.

That is exactly what I am talking about. I would be using Cingular for example 7 months, then want to go off to T-Mobile or something, do I pay for ETF?

Dark, you are saying I will have to, but others are saying no... Is there anyone out there who works for Cingular who can tell me what's up? I wouldn't even bother to cancel the service for a while, but just in case I ever need to, I don't think it makes sense to be slapped with an ETF when I brought my own device...

You are using your own equipment. Just make sure you don't get tricked somehow into signing a contract. Tell them you just want to go month to month. He's probably a sales rep...no commission if he doesn't get you locked into a contract.

if you sign a contract for the service, there's no way to avoid the ETF. It's a simple contract law matter.

If you can somehow get them to give you month to month service w/o a contract, you're fine.

Dude you will not be charged! Nor will you be in any contract! They'll try to shoot you that BS about a contract, but since you're bringing your own COM you WILL not have to be in a contract, thus if you're not in a contract there can be NO ETF 😁 !!! P.S. Ignore all post after this one and go port your number and DONT take NO for an answer!!!!!!!!

All of these people are WRONG with the exception of Cingular77. If you are using your own equipment, and not buying a phone from Cingular at a subsidized price, then you will NOT have to sign a contract, thus meaning you would NOT be subject to an ETF with Cingular.

you can sign up without a contract, but you won't get the mobile to mobile thats included in the plan.. it's only available when u sign a contract...
