Using Cingular phone in Mexico

I know Cingular lists their international rates, and there's some rate for Mexico, but I was wondering about near the border. If you're in Tijuana, is it possible to be in range of US towers still? The touristy areas of the city are probably within a couple of miles of the border, but how far does the range of towers extend? or will the phone use the strongest signal nearby (most likely a tower in Mexico)?

If there's even a possibility of that happening I add International Call Restrict (ICR) to the customers account. It will pick up the foreign tower if it's closer, or if the capacity is lower. I had a customer stationed in El Paso who would constantly get international roaming from Mexico because they're all off at the same time of day, and all using their phone at the same time. The local towers quickly fill up, but the lovely little lonely towers in Mexico were eager to pick them up.

ICR will keep your phone from roaming internationally, or at least keep you from being responsible for any of the charges.

I guess I'm wondering about the opposite case...because I would like to be in Mexico and use a US signal :-P

what happens with a cdma service in mexico? Do they have both types of service in Mexico or are they exclusively GSM down there?

Right, that's what it'll do. It wont "let" you roam off Mexico's towers, so it'll only pick up the US. If you're in a border town you NEED that feature added to your account (no cost) to keep you from accidentally picking up a different country and taking a reaming for it.

On a daily basis, it's not an issue for me (I'm not in the part of town near the border), but I get it now 🙂 maybe i'll go add that feature and see what happens down there.

if you are in TJ, you will more than likely stay connected with cingular towers. If they switch to movistar or telcel, then it won't be long before you connect to a cingular tower.

Once you go deeper into TJ (south), then you will lock in a mexican tower. Go to rosarito, puerto nuevo, & ensenada, cingular is outta da question.

For accidental roaming, just call customer care & dispute. Say it wasn't your fault that you were in SD & you incurred accidental roaming. Over 80% of reps will give you the credit.

If not, just pay the roaming fee man.
