Call quality issues

I've had Cingular for about two months, and I really want to like it, but I can't get too excited over it. The call quality is really poor.

Some background, so maybe some of you CS people can help me here. I have an SE S710a, and I am in Canyon TX, 79015. I can have a full 5 bars of signal strength, and the incoming voice gets garbled (static, whatever you want to call it) at the most inoportune times. The voice gets all fuzzy, fades out, then comes back. I can stand completely still, and it will still randomly do this.

I have called Cingular about the problem, and they sent me a replacement phone. I made a call with the new phone and I immediately notice the same problem. I call Cingular again, and the CS guy tells me he ne...

Did you buy your phone from the Cingular in Canyon? If so, go in to the store and let them know your issue. If needed talk to "Kim". I know the owner and they have a strong team that knows the area.

Remember, Canyon is tough for terrian and presents coverage challenges. They will know best where it does and does not work.

Also, does it work bad once you get up into Amarillo? If not it just might be where you live (Canyon) and not the handset.

Good luck.

I bought the phone online, so I don't have much luck when I go in to the Canyon store asking for help with my phone. I have experienced the same issues in Amarillo. I was on the east side of town the other day (albeit before I called and had my sim card reset) and the issues were just like in Canyon. I can be out in an open field, no buildings around, and flat all around me, and I still have the issues.

It just seems odd that no matter what my signal strength is, I will get the garbled voice every few seconds. It just randomly happens, no matter how I hold the phone or where I'm at (inside, outside, my vehicle).

The Cingular guy that reset my sim card told me that I need to turn my phone off every day for about 10 seconds so that w...

I can say that, in some parts, that particular phone is awful voice quality. Apparently in others it is not. Here where I live it's awful. Trying a Nokia or Motorola may make a world of difference.

I would try getting a new SIM card first, as sometimes that can interfere with your service. If it has a flaw, your call wont be secure and it will distort the voice quality. It could be something else though, we've had about 1 in 5 calls in my area with poor quality, but the reps here reported it and it's supposedly been fixed. I also recommend talking to your local store and asking if they have noticed any problems lately. I'm in DFW, so there could be something similiar up there.

I went to the Cingular store today and they gave me a new sim card even though they didn't think that was the problem. My first call was really clear, but after that, it's back to where it was. The person working there also has an s710a, and she has no problems with it in the area. At this point, I guess all I can do is continue to ask for replacement phones. At what point can I ask for a different phone? I paid $200 for my phone and am getting crappy service. I have friends who got the free phone and they have no problems with their service.

I know there's a "no lemon" policy, but I'm not confident on how many exchanges you have before you get a new one. I think it's three though.

we'll i switched to cingular gsm for 3 days becuase of rollover from verizon and it was a big mistake! its not the phone that sounds bad, it is the network gsm just cant measure up to verizons cdma. i even think cingular itsself knows that becuase they are upgrading to a new digital form of gsm in 06-07 i think they will be opperating on wcdma. and i didnt read all of your origional post, i suggest you switch to verizon if youve had so many problems with every cingular phone they sent you. just a suggestion but if you do i would highly reccoment a tri-mode phone with an extendable antenna.(motorola is coming out wih a new phone soon, i would suggest that one.)

good luck i hope i helped a little bit 🙂

As I continue to monitor my problem, I notice something that is very strange. When I'm having problems hearing the people on the other end, they can hear me perfectly fine. How is this possible? If I have enough of a signal to send out my end, shouldn't I also have enough to hear them?

I have the EXACT same problem you are describing with both my RAZR and my wife's S710. I'm in Pensacola, FL (zip 32507). Had an open ticket on this for several days. The latest answer is that it is hurricane related (even though it has been going on since well before any storm). Cingular now considers it resolved. NOT! It happens mainly at home and there is a Cingular tower within sight of my front yard so I always have a good signal strength (at least as shown on the phone). I won't bother going into the details of the problem because as I said it is exactly as kronicx describes it. The only thing I can think of is that something is interfering locally. Does anyone have any idea what could cause interference? When I travel away from home I ...

anything can cause interference...

from construction areas to building parameters.

it seems like there is a problem near your home.... now in-building reception is always horrible and the providers dont guarantee it... so you might be out of luck if you claim that it is in-building related.. i would do a ticker for outside your house....

just becuase your phone says good signal doesnt mean that is the case.... you have to check the tx status on your phone to see what the signal quality and signal strength is.. i dont know how to check for cingular though....

i suggest bothering cingular about that....
