i don't understand cingular
they switched from tdma to gsm like what was it 2 years ago. they finally complete the gsm overlap of tdma and now they want to come out with a new network i think it will be wcdma? is it true about this whole new network thing. (i dont really know that much about cingular but i was just curious, it seems weird that they want to make a new network so soon) becuase the telemarketer that called could barely speak english so i couldnt really understand what he was saying.

Umm no, its still going to be GSM. They are supposedly going to be done by the end of the year with the network integrations I think.

Cingular is not changing it's network. It will be integrating and upgrading to a new frequency 850 MHz which was aquired when they purchased AT&T. The new spectra has better in building coverage and allows for towers to be placed farther apart. It will sell a portion of it's old 1900 MHz towers to T-Mobile, which they will not up keep (like thier network) and eventually will fade away. The 850 towers are almost all up and running and Cingular will continue to invest in all it's markets inorder to improve and expand it's coverage to more of the U.S. population. The system will also have an upgraded Data network called UTMS (High speed, will not attempt to post speed estimate because it varies by geographic location) and the UTMS will hav...

UMTS with HSDPA will be a new network for Cingular, because it is a voice and data network. It is important to note that Cingular's primary voice network will continue to be GSM for many, many years to come though.

Depends on the market. In Washington-Baltimore, Cingular had the 850 and got the 1900 from AT&T

That's not true. Cingular and AT&T Wireless both had significant 850 spectrum before the merger. In fact, Cingular had more 850 than AT&T.

850 is not replacing 1900 in any way. It is supplementing it. Some areas are 850-only, while others are 1900-only, and many have both. None of that will change going forward.

Yes, but...

The switch to GSM was done specifically with WCDMA in mind. GSM is a sort of stepping stone to WCDMA, but think of it more as a foundation than a temporary solution. Unlike TDMA and analog that have a specific timeline for being phased out, GSM will continue to operate for many, many years alongside WCDMA.

WCDMA does include voice, and could theoretically replace GSM entirely, but that would be too costly for now. So, (at least for the next 5 years or so,) WCDMA will be in metro areas only, and GSM will still be the primary network for maximum national coverage.

All new WCDMA phones will also include GSM, so you won't have to choose one network or the other, and no one will be forced to upgrade.

Question:
When will another carrier come/expand into Montana? >>>(think about how necessary a cell is in the wide open spaces!)

Which carrier is the best in Hawaii?

Which phone in that case would you recommend?
