what happens if i buy a 3g phone but UMTS is not in my city?

If I buy a 3g phone and have to wait awhile for the service to roll out in the closest city to me (Los Angelas). Does the phone use regular gsm as a defaul for picking up networks. What im basically asking is can I use a 3G phone as a regular gsm phone.

Yes... all of Cingular's 3G phones will be backwards compatible with GSM and EDGE...

Yes - all 3G WCDMA phones include GSM and automatically default to that when 3G service is not available.

But if you're asking about buying a 3G phone now - like one from Europe or Asia - be warned that it will never work on Cingular's 3G network, due to different frequency bands.
