Trying Sprint, but really wanting Cingular

Well, I signed up for Sprint today. For weeks, I, along with others that I'ved talked to, have been having problems with Cingular in my area. Problems mainly where calls are either not coming in or not going out. Once it's connected, it's usually good.

I got to thinking though maybe it is my phone. Maybe that's just me not wanting to leave Cingular, because, for the past 5 years, they're been pretty good to me. Customer Service has told me it could be my phone that's a problem, but what about all the others with the same problem? I'm thinking of doing an upgrade and trying that phone out, since I get 30 days.

Does anyone have any ideas or comments on this? Maybe what kind of phone to get? I'm really not happy with the one I...

..... By the way, how does Cingular determine problems in areas? They should "hire" someone in each city or something where they can rely on them to give an accurate description of the service issues. There's been times where I can't even catch a Cingular tower, living less than 5 miles from one, and am told nothing's wrong in the area and they're not going to do anything but send an update which usually is just a temporary fix, if even at that.

Have you tried changing your SIM card? sometimes SIM cards go bad....

I got a new one in June, a 64K smartchip. Would a bad SIM cause me to only sometimes have terrible service? Right now, things seem to be ok, but earlier today was terrible. I couldn't make a call until I left town.

to put new towers in an area, they have to test them. to test them, they have to turn off the surrounding towers. that means if there are 2 towers around the 1 new tower, both will be turned off.
Hypothetically, the 2 existing towers can hold 40 calls each. they usually run with 30 calls, well under the limit. But when they're turned off, the new tower can still only take 40 calls, leaving 20 calls without a connection. Although later there will room for 120 calls, the testing requires this to see how the tower handles the load.

A way to sneak your call into the accepted ones is to turn the phone off and back on. this will recalibrate it on the network and the fresher calibrations go thru first.

See, if they were doing that in my area, I'd gladly stay with Cingular. I feel it has a lot of potential, even though it's already pretty good. I like the company, just not the service in my area. When I call while having problems, I always ask if there are any problems in my area or anyone doing any updates. They always say no, everything's fine and nothing's being added.

You know, I can understand that, but, right now, I'm off contract and majorly upset with a cell phone provider that isn't providing me with cell phone service. Right now, I cannot make or receive calls, yet I have all 5 bars. I've power cycled and nothing. To top it off, Cingular's closed. Don't know why I call, I guess in the hopes that they'll get the hint something could be awry in my area.
